I am good at tests, but the more vet school has gone on, the more I feel like that's all I'm good at. I can't recall things I learned last quarter, much less over the course of years. And it's become increasingly clear to me that everyone around me is just way sharper at the recall. I'm hoping it passes--that I surprise myself with what I know--but the feeling has gotten more pervasive with time.

It doesn't help that right now people are rushing about filling up their time with externships, for which I have applied not a one because I really just have that many rotations I want to do that the school offers. But now I'm all worried that I won't be making good contacts outside of school that way and arRGH I SHOULD BE STUDYING.

I need to work out a solid plan to counter-act what I think I don't know. Flash card preps, relistening to old lectures, something to put me back on more solid footing so this doesn't just drive me crazy forever. But first, I really do need to study for my test tomorrow.

Good luck! I think <LJ USER="fairest") had some similar concerns with med school, and I'll repeat what I always told her: Just trust that you *do* know this stuff and follow your instincts. As you get more hands-on experience, it will come back to you and you'll know more than you think. It's also tricky when it seems like other people are faster at recalling the information; I hate that it gets to be such a competition, because I always hesitated to answer out of the fear I would be wrong. You basically need to study so the answers are there for you when you need them, and I think your strategy of flash cards and listening to lectures is great. My photography teacher always told us to learn things then forget them — get good enough so you don't have to think about what to do anymore. (Kind of like driving?) Anyway, we'd be happy to help you drill any time! I think R. will be good at that.

If I haven't a thousand times before, let me recommend Mnemosyne/Repetitions, a smart flash card program. You do daily review and it makes sure to insert old cards to keep them fresh while adding new material, and it's based on some complicated cognitive science algorithm. I liked it because when I was on the train to school my first year, I would load up the app and study that way. It's great for when you are bored with little snippets of downtime, like waiting for a sandwich, waiting for the train, etc. That way you can sneak in 5 mins at a time without having to go "UGH TIME TO STUDY" and budgeting a huge chunk of your day.

Don't let other people bother you. There were people my first year who were in the library literally all day every day and they got shit grades. Everyone's study habits, abilities, and skills are different. They may be sharper at recall but who cares?

As far as externships, unless you're planning to work in Philly, would those contacts really do anything for you? If you're not planning to stay there, I don't see why you shouldn't focus on getting the SKILLS you need rather than the connections and take the rotations that seem challenging and interesting to you.

So the externships would be building outside of Philly contacts, for the most part, as I would do them. I'm debating whether I need to do one for lab animal, if that's even still something I want. (Which I also don't know.) I have about two weeks to play with, so I could do, like, exactly ONE externship. I'm tempted to just be lazy and go back to the awesome Banfield I was at this summer. They liked me there. After reliving my worst moment at this school today with another student (under similar stresses for a while), I need reminding.

Thanks for the recommendation. I will definitely get off my ass and work on flash cards with that program. Thanks!
