Help my eyes are burning

...so...tired...can't....see....

Just had to stay up until 2:30 this morning to watch [livejournal.com profile] feiran beat Portal. Urgh. Ruined for the day, I think. Fucking Mondays.

Isn't it just the most amazing thing ever! I'm so upset that it was so short.

How much longer could it have been, really? Like with Myst and games of that ilk, there's only so much puzzle-only solving that can sustain a game. There was no gradation to the goal--no sidequests, no story building detours--that would have justified the thing lasting longer than it did.

It's like trying to make a three-hour movie out of the concept for Cube. It's a great concept, but not for that long. And, as the sequels to Cube proved, trying to force narrative onto a more avant garde "setting" movie just doesn't work. I can't imagine explaining why the hell you're stuck in a subterranean lair with a psychotic, cake-obsessed computer would make the game better.

Sequel? Hell yeah, but story? Mmm, not so much.

I remember back in the day when there were expansive, 100+ level puzzle games that I loved to play for hours, like Lode Runner or Daedalian Opus. Portal's a lot better than all of them but wasn't long enough to get me my fix.

If the puzzles increased in complexity as they had been throughout the game, I could have easily played for another 3 hours. The damn thing was just fun!
