More fandom wanking, this time for [livejournal.com profile] darkling1 and [livejournal.com profile] viridian:

1. The first character I first fell in love with:
Starbuck. Like there was any doubt. I love that, insubordination aside, she's clearly the best pilot, is not only technically/militarily brilliant, but just plain tactically smart. I also really like that she's not expecting special treatment because she lost her fiance, and that she lives with the guilt but doesn't let it ruin her for all else. I admire the fact that she's able to suck it up and take orders from Apollo, even when she disagrees with him. For what she survived in season two with Simon doing that shit? Gaw. A-fucking-mazing.

2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:
Dr. Gaius Baltar. But I only didn't like him in the miniseries. At times, I still hate him and he is such a bastard. But he has these flashes of brilliance, and watching the actor playing him pulling off this schizo act is such a treat. Also, we just watched "Pegasus" last night, and it makes me want to forgive him for everything he did.

3. The character everyone else loves that I don't:
Tough one. There are so few characters I dislike, and even fewer of those that I know other people do. How about Sharon? I never really liked her. I found the Galactica one annoying and pushy and melodramatic, and the Caprica one's change for the good? I'm 'meh' to it.

4. The character I love that everyone else hates:
Again, how do I pick one? Nobody hates anyone on this show--they're all so hauntingly three-dimensional and human that it's hard to dismiss them straight out. I think Tom Zerrick (however you spell it) is probably it. I found him to be a proselytizing jerk at first, but he does really seem to have his people's best interests in mind. Yes, he still wants to be President and is only being stopped by Adama and Roslin out maneuvering him, but when Roslin revealed her cancer to the Quorum of 12, he looked credibly impressed with her, and that counts for something.

5. The character I used to love but don't any longer:
Chief Tyrol. I do still admire him, but he's been a bit shaky since Sharon was outed as a Cylon. Him and Helo butting heads, fine, building the Laura, cool, but he's fallen into flatter territory, character-wise, and I miss the old Tyrol. I miss the guy who was good to his deck crew, who burned whenever they were insulted and came within a hair's breadth of smacking the pilots who denigrated his work or his people. In "Pegasus," though, he redeemed himself when he stopped Helo from making a mistake and then killing that frakking bastard who was going to rape Sharon. I just wish his moments of action didn't hinge on his regrets over his old relationship.

6. The character I would shag anytime:
Apollo. Just...yeah, Apollo. And I'd even let him use his British accent ::siiiiiiigh::

7. The character I'd want to be like:
Dualla, actually. I wouldn't be able to handle a job like Starbuck's, or the responsibility thrust upon any in the chain of command, but I'd want to be good at what I do and be important all the same. Dualla's a savvy gal, she's tough without being a wonder about it, which is really impressive in its own right--the ability to work so hard and well people don't even realize how lucky they are to have you? That's heroism.

8. The character I'd slap:
It's a tie, which is a great homonym with who I'd slap: Colonel and Mrs. Tigh. Are they not the most annoyingly, stubbornly disfunctional couple? The only thing Tigh's done to endear himself to anyone is when he goaded Starbuck out of sickbay (and stopped her moping) and when he tried to warn Adama about Admiral Kayne (Cane? Cain?). Mrs. Tigh hasn't done jack or shit, and the only time she's been on that I've enjoyed it was when she was so drunk she was stickinig her foot into Apollo's crotch--can't blame the girl for wanting some of that...

9. A pairing that I love:
Dualla and Billy. They lack pretty much all the tension you'd find elsewhere, yet they progress very gently and slowly through their relationship. It's like total geeks in love. Plus, they're not fooling themselves in the process. Neither one has baggage that they're trying to use the other to forget, they manage to part company on the one and only date of theirs we witness without hostility even when they realize they're sort of using each other to keep the back channels of information open. And they still manage to stay together.

Did I mention the geeks in love part? Plus, you gotta love Dualla being so foxy and coy and Billy being all flustered when she's imprisoned on Tom Zerrick's ship and wondering how come she was selected to go on the mission (his fault, heee). And then there was that bit in the miniseries where President Roslin says "We have to start making babies" while the camera focuses on Dualla and Billy...such cute babies, too.

10. A pairing that I despise:
Helo and Sharon are getting up there, but I'd have to say either of the Adama boys with their professional counterparts. So, no Adama Sr/President Roslin, no Apollo/Starbuck. See? I can be fair! I'm not just saying "eeewww old people sex!" I'm saying neither man should be copulating with either woman. Adama and Roslin work so well as a team, and there's a respect there that has nothing to do with attraction, and I hate good, solid friendships that are perverted for the sake of romance (hence my hatred for 99% of fandom out there). Apollo and Starbuck have the attraction, but there's too much history, not to mention squickage given that she was going to marry his brother and Adama treats them both like his kids, so it would be at least emotionally incestuous.

1. The first character I first fell in love with:

Given that I started the series at the recap episode and then the season one finale, I have to say Jack. He was cool, his tattoos were sort of a conundrum compared to the rest of his behavior, and I liked that he was always thinking ahead (not letting Kate the bouncy take the pack full of tempermental dynamite for starters).

2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:
Sawyer. There's absolutely nothing good or admirable about Sawyer, even when he tries to do right. But he's snarky (I am such a sucker for snark), he's smart, he's shameless, he's sexy without being guh-uh gut-punched beautiful (I think Daniel Dae-Kim is still the most beautiful man on the island). His backstory slays me, and the actor who plays him has a truly wonderful range. Sawyer's amusement when he's on a con is different from his constant smirk on the island; his irritation with Ana-Lucia or Jack or anybody is different from that pure rage when he confronted he man he thought was responsible for what happened to his parents. I love the little Sawyer, I love him good.

3. The character everyone else loves that I don't:
Probably Locke, possibly Sayid. I like them okay, but I am not in awe of them like some people. I am dead curious about Locke's backstory, though. How the hell he went from the earlier walking Locke to the crippled one to the one on the island...dying to know because I can see that such a transition is possible (give the writers credit for that one--it's a believable change even without explanation) just not how. Sayid is meh to me because I don't care. There, I said it, okay? His backstory doesn't move me, his affair with Shannon disgusted me, and now he's dickless and witless because she's dead. Bor-ing.

4. The character I love that everyone else hates:
Ana-Lucia. Very few people seem to like her, but I still do. She did pretty good on her side, all things considered. Yes, she had a paranoid freakout moment and a guilt-trip melodrama, but girlfriend does all right by me.

5. The character I used to love but don't any longer:
Sun. Just got disinterested in her, is all. She stopped being interesting in season 2, and got all weepy. Blah to that, I say.

6. The character I would shag anytime:
Sawyer. Duh.

7. The character I'd want to be like:
Hurley. I think his attitude is really great, he's rich which can't hurt, and he's all around a nice guy. Plus, I would love to be able to say "dude" and have it mean a hundred different things.

8. The character I'd slap:
Charlie. He's whiny, he's fairly useless, he needs a good slap.

9. A pairing that I love:
Claire and Charlie--she takes him away from annoying the rest of us, he keeps us from being bothered by her stupid kid crying. Win-win. In a strictly non-romantic way, Locke and Eko should probably bring about the end of the world, it is so awesome.

10. A pairing that I despise:
Jack and Kate. Kate and Sawyer. Somebody, please shoot Kate and stop her from making eyes at either of them?

More to come! Buffy has been thrown down, and I'll tackle that one when I can. Hee, I love this meme--it just lets me go fangirly!
