FUCK!

What the frigging hell? If it weren't for a whimsical story from [livejournal.com profile] plungerdna, I wouldn't have known this:

The price of a first class stamp is now $0.39?! But I sent out letters on Monday with $0.37!!! Is there an amnesty? Am I getting those letters back? [livejournal.com profile] umeyard, you have to let me know if you get your birthday card, because otherwise I might never see the letters again!

FUCKING POSTAL SYSTEM, WHY WASN'T I INFORMED?!?

...it was on the news a couple of times. Plus they posted it on the postal web site ( http://www.usps.com/communications/news/stamps/2005/sr05_055.htm ). If there isn't enough postage then they usually just return the letter. You did remember to put a return address...I hope?

I did, but I am pissed off that I waited to mail things until Monday. I haven't gotten the letters back--that means it's okay, right? I did put return address labels on them (I've got a dozen free ones from charities I never donated to for some reason...)

It should be ok. Though sometimes they can take a week to get back to you. Another factor might be where you dropped them off. If it's someplace within your zip code then it will get back quickly. If it's in another zip code then things might get tricky.

I think I mailed them at a box on the corner down the block from my apartment. So, good sign?

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it. If you don't get them back in a week then give the local post office a call. On the flip side, it's also a possibility that they might screw up and actually deliver the letters to their intended destination.

No one was informed. I usually hear about postal rate hikes nearly once a week for three months leading up to them. This time, I heard maybe once or twice at all. I have to go get a bunch of 2c stamps myself before I next need to mail something (at which point I'll likely forget if they aren't sitting right next to the stamps I already have).

See, you're not the first or last who'll tell me they didn't know. Most people I talked to only became aware of the rate hike recently. There was little or no fan-fare when it was agreed upon to be raised, only reminders of when it went into effect, so grrr at them.
