A few months ago I attended a filming of an HBO Robert Klein special. I was startled when a voice over the speakers came on, before the show even started, and instructed us through several rounds of pre-taped laughter and response. There was "Laugh for about 5 seconds, then taper off," "laugh and end with applause," "groan/laugh like you just heard something slightly offensive," etc. It's quite possible that Cho's audience didn't crack a smile during the actual taping, but put on a great show in the pre-taping laugh recording sessions in hopes of attaining that holiest of grails: being on television.
