Amy suggested I go as the Bride from Kill Bill, and, given that I had exactly no more ideas than that, that's what I settled on. I have no imagination, so I had no way to think of another costume. Thursday, I got a perfect shirt that was passibly good for the top Uma Thurman wears, and today I just settled on the pants and forwent the shoes in favor of my ass-kicking new boots. Had to compromise on a wig, too, getting one and having Alicyn shear it perfectly for me (she made polyester hair look half-way decent, as opposed to what I would have done to it and as opposed to what it started as).

The only problem was: NO SWORD. I went to every major discount store, major department/wal-mart-y type store I knew where they were, and nada. I almost, almost compromised and just grabbed another type of sword, but, seeing how ghetto-ized the rest of the outfit was going to be (the shirt and bottom are not the same color, and I was going to have to marker-in the black lines), I decided it was okay to be a purist about the whole katana thing. I talked to a guy at FAS who actually has one, but his response was "it doesn't leave my house." I didn't ask him for it anyway, seeing as I wanted neither the responsibility nor the job of A) keeping track of such a thing, B) keeping it safe from damage, C) keeping myself and others safe from it and our own human curiosity.

Thus, I went to the holiday party sans weapon, but hoping the shitty wig and my cobbled-together, permanent-marker drawn (I did use masking tape to keep the lines straight) outfit would speak for itself. I asked Alicyn how it looked when I was fussing over the wig, and her response was basically, "Does it matter? No one will know who you are anyway." Yeah, sometimes I love her, but Alicyn was kinda dismissive about my costume from the outset, which has been both majorly irritating and kinda hurtful, too. She's BIG about Halloween, seeing as she makes her own costumes and can actually sew (unlike, say, me, with the Alice costume), so I understand my cheapy wig and equally cheapy (if not cheaper) discount clothing and marker outfit seemed juvenile to her. I was miffed plenty, especially since I was really worried about being the only one dressed up and, worse, being the only one dressed up and dressed up both poorly and as something no one would recognize.

I need not have worried. Actually, I should have worried about the DIRECTIONS to Alex's place more than my stupid costume. I didn't get out of Unilodge till at least 9:30, got on the right tram, then realized suddenly, "Hey, I have no idea when to get off the tram." I got off and walked along Bridge Road in Richmond (I was in the right suburb at least), and stopped when I thought I recognized Lennox Street as the one the road from which the one I wanted branched. Well, I got a few REALLY DRUNKEN CAT CALLS from cars, and it took me a moment to realize that they were for me (because I wasn't dressed sexily at all. I realized why when I saw Telstra Dome in the distance: Tonight was the Australia vs Ireland International Rules Football (a cross between footy and Gaelic football). Which meant a lot of Irishers running around Melbourne (they're also here for Ireland v Australia in the Rugby World cup 2003 tomorrow). I didn't really worry about it until I heard one whistler on the street whistle twice. I was only really worried then because I was thoroughly lost. I turned down a random street to try to walk back up going around, and two guys passed me on the way to their car. I asked if they knew where Hull St. was. They didn't but they had a Melways (street directory of Melbourne--it's huge!), found where it was and gave me a ride because it was on their way.

It took a few odd looks at the buzzer to make it work, but I got in and Alex popped her head out to signal me to the right apartment. I really needn't have worried, seeing how she was dressed. She was a ghoul, I think, with blue drawn-on veins, a black dress, long nails, and this really cool wire headband that she'd twisted her hair around (looked kinda like the arms on that spooky tree in Sleepy Hollow--and man, was it going to hurt to take that out, I imagined). I walked into the entrance hall and was greated by a fellow draped in spiderwebs and spiders and face-painted. And I'll be damned if the first thing he said wasn't, "You're Uma Thurman from Kill Bill, right?" I must have been walking on air for the next half-hour. Even when I had to explain to most everyone else, including Senpai Vicki, I was still happy to do it. The best wrong-guess of the evening was Corey's--she guessed I was someone from ABBA (given the platinum-ity of the wig and the cut to it, I'm not surprised, actually---it's my favorite wrong guess ever ^.^).

Turned out I ended up chatting with Indra and Luke, two huge Tarantino fans who were very impressed; Indra gave me 'coolness points' for the choice of costume. Alex and her...well, co-host (I think boyfriend, but I don't think he lived there, but she kept calling things like her cat 'ours' so I guess he figures in there somewhere), Rob, liked the movie, too, and we all discussed the music and how well it was used, how notably in lots of scenes, and how it made different impressions on us as a result of where and how it was used. Alex had "Bang Bang" and "Battle Without Honor or Humanity" both on her playlist...SIDENOTE: Alex's playlist rocked my world--great Halloween music, Danny Elfman out the wazoo in places, substituted in with both Matrix soundtracks currently available, Kill Bill of course, some songs from The Transporter--I kept saying all night how I just loved the whole thing, each song ended and another good one replaced it, and she said she'd e-mail me the full list of what she used (TEE!).

Not a horribly eventful night, but Alex knows how to throw a party. She had a smoke machine, she changed some of her pictures on the wall to be scary faces and a printed-out, stained for authenticity Satanic verse, a witch's hex symbol in chalk on her floor, two TVs playing Halloween-themed movies (Bram Stoker's Dracula, Queen of the Damned, Interview with the Vampire, Blade II---uh, mostly vampire movies, I guess), had red plastic wrap over the lights in her bathroom for a really eerie effect, and served some themey drinks (a hand in the punch, eyeballs: baileys with creamed drizzled with red food dye and with a cocao bean in the middle). Combined with the great atmosphere-y music, it was a kick-arse party.

I got back and told Alicyn about people recognizing the costume, and she was sarcastic with a "And I bet that made your night" remark. I was about to slug her, but I decided to let her finish her phone call to her boy back home (good, he can drive her up the wall as my revenge). She did say that I managed to match up the stripes on the top and the pants very well. I didn't do it really intentionally, but it was nice to get a modifier on her mostly negative commentary. I think she just misses being able to do something big for Halloween. She went with the Mouth to the Exchange Student Halloween Ball dressed as like a ho, with a tight-y shirt and skirt and lots of eyemakeup-the Mouth was Avril Lavigne, which is suitably annoying for her. Justin was a bathroom wall, and Riley somehow got his tie to stick up and backwards and taped a plastic bag to his shin and posed: he was supposed to be a person caught in the wind, which worked surprisingly well.

I'm glad Senpai Vicki is a professional photographer, so, maybe I can direct people to photos of the evening when Alex posts them. Please try not to laugh too hard when you see me. I wasn't going to bother with photos when I saw she had her nice camera with her; would be an exercise in futility, really. Here's hoping tomorrow is as much fun and has as many wonderful costumes. Oh yeah, I'm taking photos next time (don't trust the FAS people entirely on that one).
