I don't miss this...
Feb. 10th, 2005 12:11 pmI haven't had a cold in while. I had sorta a head-cold, stuffiness and general tiredness a couple weekends ago that kept me away from a dinner with Liz M and theKathy, but it wasn't that bad. It was malaise compounded with tiredness, and I got over it in like a day.
However, this cold refuses to go lightly. Starting Monday night/Tuesday morning, I couldn't sleep because I frequently couldn't breathe, or I woke just as my nose started to run. Tuesday was no picnic, but Wednesday was worse. Because by Wednesday, I'd spent two nights not deeply sleeping (some fucked up dreams, I think, but I don't remember). I took off half an hour early, then an hour early yesterday after slogging it through the day. I went to the New York City Ballet last night with my mother, so I needed the rest before that. I came home and popped some Benedryl. If nothing else, that would at least knock me out and let me sleep the whole night, and maybe it would clear up the congestion, too.
Of course, the problem with Benedryl, as I'd forgotten, is that when it puts you to sleep, it doesn't get processed out of your system. I woke this morning feeling worse for the drugs and maybe the cold. My cough is productive, which is encouraging and more troublesome--means I have to cough more, but could be a sign of a turn around. Still, I almost called in sick today. Then I remembered how 'kindly' and 'compassionately' my boss let me go yesterday and realized it would be not worth the effort to make her care that I was too ill to come in.
Seems I was right to assume no sympathy, as I had a request to make a large gel this morning waiting for me, and I'm off to do some sterile work that I've been told not to cough on. If I have to cough, I have to work entirely in the sterile hood, even for the not sterile parts. ::le sigh:: That's what I get. Not, "Oh, you sound awful, poor thing." No, yesterday it was, "I hope I don't catch what you've got," and today it's "don't get your germs on my stuff."
Note to writing group people--I might have to just forgo the evening. If that happens, please leave copies of your stories--I'll get to them later and return them to you.
