On a less serious note than my last post, I've booked my ticket for the Super Shuttle to pick me up at my apartment and take me to JFK. The way I figured it, it was about $40 for the door-to-airport and back again service they offered versus the $30 for the shuttles that leave from midtown. The timing of the midtown shuttles were such that I'd have to get up about the same time as the earliest door-to-door van option in order to make the connection at Port Authority (always get lost in that place, besides). It's about $10 difference with the subway cost factored in, and that's worth it not to have to struggle up and down subway stairs with a suitcase.

Especially as I'm coming back on a red-eye flight after which I'm sure I'll be about as happy to be awake as can be expected (I don't sleep well on planes; why do I do that to myself?). This way, they fetch me, get me back home, and I can shower and such before I go to work (and be less disgruntled about having to navigate my way uptown amidst rush hour traffic. I only have to hope I'm out of JFK early enough to escape the worst of the traffic.

Still, beats the three plus hours you'd have to budget to make it to where the AirTrain picks you up. For all that that's $5, it's still not worth it.

Rewatching Doctor Who is a good idea. (series two spoilers) )

From a pros/cons article about the latest big three of video games systems, tell me you don't read this sentence exactly like I did:

"Like the PS3, the Wii has a wireless motion-sensitive controller. Butit's unique in that many games use a one-hand-only, TV-remote-shaped controller."

Come on, you know your mind went there, too.

Oh boy...

If ever I needed a reason to hate Tyra Banks, I've got one now. I dunno if I've ranted about her stupid-ass show before or not, but you're getting an earful now. Her show consists of the beautiful, wealthy, oh-so-wise Tyra Banks going "undercover" in various guises. I saw a clip of her excursions, and it basically went from stupid "Tyra goes undercover as...a white girl!" to fairly offensive "Tyra goes undercover as...a fat girl!" to the plain awful "Tyra gets processed at a women's prison" (okay, at least that last one meant she was getting the full-body search and humiliation she deserves for basically pretending to be all the regular girl things she's not). It's horrible for being horrible even before you consider how plain ridiculous the setups are. Tyra as the fat girl went on "dates" and immediately, without pre-amble, jumped in with "Do you like big girls? I feel like a lot of guys don't like big girls...like me. Are you judging me for being fat right now?" Hard-hitting, not setting up the guy stuff, that is.

But this...this latest is just...I think she's mental. My roommate is watching the show for shits and giggles, I assume, and this one is "Modeling Scams Exposed!" And it is SICK. By "sick," I mean many, many depraved things are going on right the fuck now. For starters, this woman is setting up a total lie and pretending to set up a casting call for models. So she's getting girls who are hopeful to come down and think they have a shot at (don't laugh) their dream career. The mocking documentary-style shoot is broken up with Tyra (of all people) patronizingly talking with her studio audience about the "dangers" of model shoots, how to make sure they're legit. ALL WHILE SHE'S SET UP A COMPLETELY FALSE ONE THAT WILL NO DOUBT CONFUSE THE GIRLS CAUGHT IN THE WEB. This isn't Borat, Tyra. You're not exposing hatred, you're taking advantage of naive girls and exploiting their misunderstandings and basically laughing at them.

It gets creepier, too. The fake photographer and his crew talk some of the girls into doing nude shots. While Tyra watches the progress from another room. She then sweeps into the room, reveals that it's NOT a photo shoot and that they've been tricked into doing this so they could then be lectured about it. SICK SICK SICK. So she's not only tricking then humiliating them, she's watching them disrobe and embarrass themselves in another room. That doesn't seem voyeuristic at all. The people in the room at least have the good grace to look vaguely ashamed of what they're doing. Tyra going in and lecturing them with her "You beautiful girl, you don't need to be doing this" schtick is so wrong, I can't even say it.

The kicker:
"I have been warning girls so long about this. I tell them over and over again, I tell them on America's Next Top Model. I don't know what else I can do."

You...you cunt. And she's somehow surprised that NONE of the girls she has VIDEO TAPE PROOF of their HUMILIATION would come onto the show to explain why they did what they did. Maybe because your incredibly upscale mock set up of photographer and assistants told them they could be models? Nooooo...
