ha ha ha ha

Only I could get away with this question as a legitimate one for Invertebrate Zoology....(I hope, anyway)

Q: In a fight to the death, would Mothra beat Them! ?
A: Mothra, as flying insect, has a tactical disadvantage over Them--giant ants--in that a) she has to support her weight in the air, and b) well, there's really only one of her versus a colony of Them. Considering option a) for the time being alone, Mothra would have to fight against considerable gravity to stay aloft--something very difficult due to her increased mass. Insects are able to fly because they are usually small, with huge surface area to volume ratios--since gravity affects you more when you have more volume, it would stand to reason Mothra would have a very difficult time flying. Them would also be affected by gravity, but being adapted for life on land, are far more used to walking anyway. This is assuming that both species are able to breathe at all. In a fight, even just one Them would seem to have the advantage over Mothra. However, since Mothra was able to hold her own against Godzilla for so long, this reasoning, however sound, is proven incorrect--popular theory dictates that Mothra would kick the antennae of any other giant bug creature.

I think if you take into account that many of the mutant creatures such as Mothra tend to develop unusual abilities, and given that Mothra was able to life Godzilla into the air in battle, it's safe to assume that Mothra has the ability to control gravity relative to it's person (or mutant bugginess if you want to split hairs). Given this, and the fact that other than size the ants of THEM have no real ability outside normal bugginess, then Mothra would end up winning. Though due to the shear numbers involved it would be an epic 3 part miniseries for the battle ;)

I don't remember for sure, but doesn't mothra breathe fire? Cuz in that case, she could just sit on the ground and toast Them as they came towards her.
