Have I ranted about the Japanese guy who sits behind me yet? No? Excellent.

RAAAAAAANT!!!!

Seriously, this guy is friendly, nice, hard-working, and never a bother even though we sit chair-to-chair at our desks. The problem is that he is constantly muttering (and swearing) to himself in Japanese. And it's not even very complicated Japanese--this is the kind of stuff you could pick up from a few episodes of Bebop, for crying out loud. You don't have to be a fanboy to decipher it, is all I'm saying. And it's distracting because I do understand it, but I have to think about it first. And aaaaah!!

Why not just tell him to stop, you say? Because I firmly believe he has no idea he's even doing it. He sounds so quizzical half the time I'm certain he has no filter for his brain that lets him know he's speaking aloud. Very annoying and weeeeeird.

I doubt he has any idea that you understand him. After all, most Americans aren't anime fans and don't know any Japanese beyond "Siyonara" and "Honda."

This is why....

::laughs:: Good point.

Then again, it's hard to mistake what "Shimatta!" means the way he says it.

I wear them from time to time, so it's not that I'm not allowed, just that it's a hassle to pull them on and off whenever I'm come and gotten or when people need me. Better investment would be a muzzle (for him).

When I was in Brazil I got into the habit of saying whatever popped into my head in public because almost no one there speaks English, and I was only there for a week. The temptation of thinking no one understands you is a powerful one to resist.

I guess so. He has another guy in the lab who speaks Japanese to shoot rapid fire Japanese at. He can mutter the easy stuff to himself.

I have a tendancy to swear under my breath at work, never noticed it till they sat a new girl next to me at work and she thought i hated her (we are good friends now btw)

but it could be stranger, i have a tendancy when i get mad, if you watch my hands it looks like i am fidgety, really i am using sign language and saying usually rather bizzare things at the person while sounding nice...its funnier when i am on the phone...usually at work

That's right, you know ASL. I bet there's all kinds of cussing you can get away with right under people's noses.
