Alphabet Meme Revisted
Sep. 19th, 2006 01:28 amAfter chatting with
ivy03 this weekend, I realized that part of the problem she had with her letter as given by me in the Alphabet Music Meme was that she chose to take songs she was reasonably sure people didn't know. She outdid me in that respect, and that was before considering that she uploaded the songs as well.
So, I have gone back and uploaded my previous selections (that should make
viridian happy, too). And I've selected another set of five "S" songs (sticking with the letter that God and
saikogrrl gave me, damn it!) that are a tad more obscure. I'm sure, given the eclectic mix of tastes of my friends, all of them are known by one or another person on my f'list. It's just that I get so much of my music from other people that I can't often find any that y'all wouldn't have heard. The difficulty is compounded by having lived with
feiran for about five-six years, such that we know each other's music pretty much entirely. I'm discounting her from the "obscure" part of the meme, but if I do manage to put up one--just one would be nothing short of miraculous--that she hasn't heard or doesn't know fairly well, I'll feel better about investing time in this meme again.
1. Spider and the Fly - London After Midnight
Good God, I think I got this song from a fanfic. Back in the day, right, where that was really cool to me, I thought it was keen that people put lyrics in the middle of fanfic chapters. Because that's superclassy. One thing to be said for this fanfic (probably the only thing) was that the writer did have good taste (Depeche Mode and The Cure--I confess, it was really one of my alternate personalities, but not really). This one was one I'd never heard of, and it's a bit of a dark horse on my playlists, but it's smooth and gothy at the same time. Also by them and worthy of mention is "A Letter to God," which I actually like better but does not, in fact, begin with S. Oh well. Enjoy six minutes of this instead!
2. Send Me an Angel - Thrice
A cover of an already good song not harmed by the punk-ish makeover. This is as much as surprise to me as you all, trust me. It was off an album I borrowed from my flatmate in Australia, and just about everything on the "Punk Goes Pop" album is dreadful, with this being the exception.
3. Sorrow - Bad Religion
My cool cousin Lisa loves this band to pieces, but I admit I can't really work up enthusiasm for them aside from this song and "Infected" (that would be the Guitar Hero mojo at work). It's singable and fun and energetic despite being rueful, as the title suggests. A fun one nevertheless.
4. Superman - Stereophonics
Off of--surprise, surprise--the second Smallville mix. I really like everything I hear by this group, so why haven't I gotten more of their stuff? No clue. I should get on that. I like the vocals going from the not-quite-falsetto twangy to the deeper, darker drawl.
5. Shout It Out - Slaughter
I couldn't resist. While Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure is superior to Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, I happen to love the soundtrack for the latter. Roommate Liz still likes to make fun of me for owning a CD that has a Winger song on it (and...sorta...maybe...kindabutnotreallynotmindingitthatmuch), but the soundtrack is hairbandy fun. The start of my movie-soundtrack love? And, because you are lucky, lucky people, I went and found the hilariously stupid video that I still remember to this day without You Tube. I remember Bill and Ted falling down the hole to Hell to the "Baby I'll show you the waaaa-eee-aaaaaaayyyy..." part of the chorus.
Huh, from watching the video again, it seems they are not quite hairband. They're a little too clean cut for that. It's like nice boys next door playing at being hairband rock guys more than anything else. Kinda like the kid brothers of real rockers--they're not quite attitude-y enough to command awesome wardrobes or really hot chicks (just moderately hot ones). Baby brother's first music video! Still, classic cheesey song and I love it.
And for the folk I was talking to about this, here is Richard Cheese's cover of "Down with the Sickness" from Dawn of the Dead (2004). Hi-fucking-larious. Download it, love it, and realize that as funny as it is on its own, the timing of its being played in the movie? THAT MUCH MORE KILL-YOU-SO-DEAD FUNNY. Which is ironic, in the Alanis Morrisette kind of way, as the movie is about zombies. Anyway, download it because I can't imagine anyone who won't love it. My youngest sister, who finds the Disturbed original fun just because of the ridiculous "OH wah-ah-ah" beginning part nearly died the first time she heard the calmer, loungier version of those very same syllables.
