Me: Oh, that's actually the cable box.
wellgull: It receives signals directly from outer space!

It's much less amusing when you come home and find out your show wasn't recorded because the box turned itself off. Of course, this was in the pre-Bittorrent era (at least for me).

This is true. It's worse when you've set it up and the clock was wrong to begin with. Freak power surges you can't help, but the clock being off kills me.
