trinityvixen: (epic fail)

I can't help having the IMDB brain, but I didn't even need it tonight.

I've been trying to get through the first season of Supernatural a little faster because I can't keep [livejournal.com profile] ivy03's set forever and I've nearly had it that long already. I've already pegged the odd character actor who I'm sure has haunted the backdrops of many a show. I've wept for the misuse of the fabulous Callum Keith Rennie (oh yeah, it was worse than his misuse on Smallville, though at least it was better--in both shows--than what Smallville did to poor Helo). Just yesterday, I recognized the name in the credits and put it to the face of the kid now playing West over on Heroes. Normally, this shit bothers me only to the extent that I never learn the character's name and I just call them whatever I know them as better.

So, I'm watching an episode before going out to celebrate my roommie's b-day, and suddenly I see Rita! Or, I guess more people know her as Darla. I don't. I never watched Angel and she wasn't on Buffy nearly enough to count. But I have watched a lot of Dexter, so she was Rita for the whole episode. Which made it fairly hilarious because I failed to see why she couldn't just get her boyfriend to kill some people who deserved it so's a grim reaper could have the life force or something to heal her. I made loads of jokes along the same vein.

But really, she is just so much better on Dexter. She's doing the cutie-pie thing way too much for even the two seconds she was in this episode. Horribly distracting. Of course, the preacher was also one of those "Hey it's that guy!" actors (he's not a preacher--he's Reed Richards' doorman!)

Over all, the episode was okay despite the distraction and the series is still okay. I'm not fannishly devoted to it, but it has its merits. I just am not really all that curious about the overreaching plot or the father character at all. I guess I've always been a monster-of-the-week girl since the days of The X-Files. There was one good thing about this episode though. I think it brought out the funny in me. I totally called the omg!twist! about three years before it happened, and then when they showed who it was being targeted, I burst out with, "You can't use DEATH to enforce your right-wing agenda!" I kill me.

Oh man, though, Rita, Rita, Rita. Just as I was trying to learn to let go, and to not refresh the TWoP boards for Dexter every two seconds when I'm bored at work. She shows up and now I HAVE TO HAVE MORE DEXTER. AHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Mmmm Callum Keith Rennie. I need to rewatch that episode in between repeated viewings of Leoben-heavy BSG eps. My crush on Gaius Baltar has been abandoned for a Leoben crush because I remembered how hot CKR used to be and still mostly is.

I find that actress really distracting--she was cast as Darla for the pilot then killed, only to come back in a billion plot lines and a two season long arc on Angel. And she really only does one thing.

But dude! They played Don't Fear the Reaper! How can you not feel the love?

She does the quiet thing a lot, I guess. On Dexter she shows more range, but then so does most everyone (Lauren Velez I'd seen on some Fox cop show and I wouldn't have thought her to be as good as she's proven to be on Dexter).

I do feel the love for the classic rock. It's what makes me marginally prefer Dumbfuck to Fugly. At least he's got good taste. Plus, for all that the morality stuff was angsted over, I did enjoy the fact that someone so intimately aware of the things that go bump in the night after their deaths was at peace with his own. It made a certain kind of character-sense click go off. So, yeah, no, it's not like it was a bad episode, just that I was really distracted throughout the whole thing. I tell you, one liiiittle cross-over and the reaper had all the victims he needed.
