Just as I wrote the last LJ post, it was already being asked for! Well innit that special?

Sigh. I printed out the ticket so I can give it away and I'm looking at it very wistfully on my desk right now. I want to gooooo. I've been so good, and I waited, and siiiiiigh.

But I'm being a good doobie and going to Iowa. Tickets purchased for way too much and starting flights way too early both mornings I fly. That alone will make me prone to hysterics. Also, it's going to rain. You couldn't ask for more mournful circumstances, methinks. Luckily, my family and I share a sense of humor and it turns out that a semi-mean thought I had was one all the rest had at the same time.

The thought was this: isn't it just like Gramie to do this at the most inconvenient time for all involved? My dad's birthday is being overshadowed. (He's 60, this should be a big one. We'll have to do something really big for Father's Day.) It's right before Mother's Day. (So the guilt and grief can live forever! Just what someone with a long-standing--decades long--martyr complex would have wanted!) Darryl has to fly in from Hawai'i. (Another month, and he'd have been in Nevada. Also, he has NO vacation time left from interviewing for fellowships, and he had to call in thirty billion favors to get out there--8+ hours of flying out there each trip.) Dana was supposed to attend a conference on Friday. (That her work paid for.)

Next to all that, I feel very petty being sad about missing a movie, so guilt is at least making the longing go away. Not helping? A very shiny poster for Iron Man that I got to see because I was stuck at the front of a crowded bus this morning as it crawled along 125th street. Stupid marketing! Stop being so good!

It's not a crime to be upset by how this is inconveniencing you, because it is. It's shitty that you have to pick up and fly out to Iowa for a funeral and don't even get to do the fun thing you'd planned. I'd be annoyed, too.

Thank you for the offer, and I was considering it, but I'm really putting myself entirely into my mother's hands and I doubt that's what she'd like to go see.

We're headed to Spencer, Iowa. It's way north and west in Iowa. I'm not kidding when I say it's really in the nowhere territory.

And I don't really mean it. I mean, we do mean everything we say when trying to wrap our heads around stuff like this, but not really, you know? It's just a movie, and I don't really care. I'm sure I'm just more testy about it because I'm just generally emotional at the moment.

I am annoyed. But I'm also genuinely saddened that this is happening, and I understand that part of being a good daughter means supporting my mother through this. And whatever my feelings towards my grandmother ultimately are or are not, I do love my mother enough to skip a goddamned movie.

I feel kinda silly though sending you all to it without me. You are under orders to enjoy it.

Honestly, if you didn't already have 500 people volunteering to see it with you later, I would've given my ticket away and seen it with you later. Half the fun of the May movie is your commentary upon said movie. :(

I flew to Des Moines and got my sister to pick us up and drive us. I've heard of Okobogi from my family going there on previous trips. I, alas, had no time. I'm already back home.

Aww, I'm really sorry to have missed it, but it was pretty essential that I went to this. My mother and her sister seemed a lot happier when we four kids (Devin was at home) were able to distract with goofiness. And I got some closure on that part of my growing up (and learned a lot about my grandmother that gives me a better picture of her life, too). So it was a worthwhile trip even if I missed the May Movie.

And I long to squee with you over BSG, only I have to watch it first.

I dunno if you'll squee. Everyone aside from Kara/Leoben 'shippers and Callum Keith Rennie fans (which are occasionally -- not often, but OCCASIONALLY -- not the same thing) seems to hate it.

I, on the other hand, have no words that are fit for polite company re: how much I liked it.
