New kid behind me, recently hired, just had his text message alert go off on his cell phone.

It made the transforming noise when the robots turn into cars or vice versa from Transformers.

He immediately said "Sorry!" But I was like "THAT WAS THE TRANSFORM-Y NOISE. THAT IS AWESOME. HAVEN'T YOU SEEN MY BAG?" I then grabbed my purse (that [livejournal.com profile] darkling1 got me for my birthday) and showed him.

Yeah, geeks are awesome and thick on the ground in science. SCIENCE!

They're everywhere lately. (Must be the overcast skies.) I was leaving Best Buy on Saturday and saw a kid pulling into the parking lot with license plate TEN4WARD. Then Sunday at Starbucks I was told my Starfleet Academy shirt is cool.

Seriously. The only thing that keeps me from doing that with less geeky things (Star Trek is still unquestionably geeky, but Transformers did just have a movie out that was more action-heavy than space robot-heavy) is the knowledge that hipsters wear that shit and don't give a rat's ass. I hate hipsters. They make it hard to tell geeks that they're awesome.

And since they're being "ironic", they'll laugh in your face if you tell them one of their geeky things is cool. Though at least you have the obvious retort available: "At least I'm not a fucking hipster."

I imagine your newest roommate must get terribly confused being a geek AND a hipster. :P

Lol, he still denies the hipster part. But yes, it must be confusing for him.

Yeah, pretty much, "I'd rather be a [fill in the blank] than a hipster" is true for any value of [fill in the blank] except "Nazi" or "Republican."

Very funny. I would have to make sure his being from Minnesota doesn't mean he's a conservative. That's a deal breaker.

Actually, you'd like him. His normal phone call ring is the Super Mario Bros. theme song.

Geeks FTW! XD

I was SO amused recently when watching Gilmore Girls, Rory's message tone was the "ding ding ding" of Mario getting coins. ^^

You just have to watch out for the hipsters. I like that genre has taken over movies and TV a lot, but I'd love for fashion to forget it already so they can go back to wearing t-shirts for bands no one's heard of (or ever liked) and leave my stuff alone.
