So, I have finished season three of Supernatural. So.

That was rather graphic was it not? I know this show likes to torture the two leads, but this seemed a tad excessive. And this is me talking. I know from excessive.

I also know that this isn't the sort of thing you angst over. This is the sort of thing that FUCKS PEOPLE UP regardless of whether or not they are used to such horrors as part of their routine. Nevertheless, I'm sure that angst is exactly where the new season is going, judging from show history. That seems really hollow. I would think the difficult choice after this would have been to keep Sam and Dean (who of course isn't going to stay in Hell, but NO SPOILERS, those in the know!) apart because what the shit? How would you even have them look at each other again, much less do their usual slough-it-off-with-a-joke shtick? Not that I want Dean to stay in Hell or anything. (Though it would be kinda cool if he were a demon and escaped and came back to Earth and kept fucking other monsters up. That would be fun. Fanfic, here I come.) Just...I will be disappointed in the new season if they return to the road-tripping. It just won't work. Perhaps that explains the new guy...?

Oh, and I don't get the deus ex machina defeat of the Big Bad. I'm sure that explanation is forthcoming? The whole thing seemed like a bunch of bad ideas and stupid mistakes, much like a lot of the drive of the season. I liked it a lot, but I've got neck trauma trying to keep up with the whiplash of week-to-week changes of attitude on Dean's part about going to Hell. And this episode was like the entire season of that in forty minutes. "We can't go, we have to plan! No, let's go without a plan! The knife is stupid! Let's use the knife! I don't want to die. Or, I don't want to die, but I'm still going to dictate terms about how I want to stay alive that will most likely end up getting me killed. I hate Ruby. Ruby! Hi! Let's face facts: I have to go to Hell. Hellhound--RUN AWAY!!" Yeesh. I may not like Sam being a whiny tool, but at least he's consistently a whiny tool.

On the whole, however, I liked the season a lot. Bela never stopped irritating me, Ruby was abused as a character. I did like that they were there anyway. That doesn't make sense but it does. I didn't like their characters, but I liked the give-and-take between them and the leads. I really enjoyed the Roadhouse crew in season two for much the same reason: it's nice to see other people working at this mystery and monsters stuff, and it's just a relief to not have constantly new faces forever and ever. Because you never see the new faces again. (Even recurring characters were new faces--the crossroads demon had, what, thirteen different bodies?) I love Bobby, but it can't just always be Bobby with info, Bobby in trouble, Bobby as backup. It should be more interactive. So while I hated Bela, I like the idea of an opportunist making a living off the supernatural like she did. (I confess to really enjoying the fact she went to Hell. Sue me.) This is sort of the purpose that Gordon served--here's another way to do what the leads do, to react to the things they see. It's interesting and the show could use more than just two guys making puppy faces at each when they're not calling each other mono-syllabic names.

One thing: I seem to remember people exploding when this season ended, and not in a good way. I'll try scrounging the respective parties' LJs, but if you want to share links or leave comments to either refute or justify that impression, I'm all ears.
