I really wish Edward Said were alive for this campaign. He'd have some elegantly pointed words to say, I should think... (despite his deceased status, I am in love with Edward Said - he is genius)
I don't know much about him except for the brou-ha-ha he got enmeshed in at Columbia when he threw rocks over in Israel. That picture was in the paper a lot, but I never really investigated. It was university politicking, far as I could tell which is dead boring.
Lol. He wrote a pretty influential book called Orientalism, in which he basically quantified the "otherizing" of eastern cultures - turning them into inferiors, etc. He's written on all sorts of stuff, but that was his seminal work.
White people don't really ever bother to get non-white cultures, they just use them as a foil to establish whatever positive characteristics they want to about themselves (see Herodotus' descriptions of the Egyptians, ff.) Also they're convenient for race tourism, as an excuse to indulge in hedonistic pleasures.
