So, writing group is on. I'm suggesting a first meeting for next Thursday, November 4 (my God, it's November already!?), at Carrie's and my apartment. Meet time is 8:00 pm, allowing for travel time and late work hours both, but flexibly rearranged as necessary.

For the first meeting, I'm requesting now TWO things: a piece of work to share (including 5-8 copies, just to be sure all have), and a few book recommendations. Yes, I'm adding a reading portion to our writing group because some of the best writers are the best readers. On Thursday next, please have in mind the titles of one or two books that you've been wanting to read, have read and love, have read and want further opinion, or just saw in the store and liked the cover. I'm encouraging haven't-reads because they're more likely to have not been read by others, especially new books. Then, we as a group will choose one and plan to have read it two meetings later. So, after our first meeting, we'll have a second, and then at the third, people should come back having read the book we selected.

All further writing/reading group updates are going to be on the lj group 'ourbooks.' Please, friend this group so you see updates on your friends page, or, if you don't wish to do that, please be sure to check it for meeting time, writing contributors for the week, book for the month, and any in-between postings people make (long fictions, or just pieces you want to just lj workshop are what I'm thinking here).

WHO WANTS TO GO SEE THE MOVIE 'SAW' THIS SATURDAY???? C'mon, y'all were psyched to go when we saw, ha ha, the trailer in front of Resident Evil: Apocalypse. I'm thinking, if we can get it, east side, like Orpheum, and we can play dress-ups for Halloween a day early at our apartment. At the very least, we can just get some drinks in us before we go. Either way, meeting up before hand is a good idea. I'm thinking a reeeeeal late movie, like I said, just so it's officiallly Halloween when we see it (further justfying costumes). SO LET ME KNOW IF YOU WANT TO GO, PEOPLE!!!!

YES!!! I WANT TO GO!!!

Though I doubt I'll be in any kind of certifiable costume. If you catch me on IM, I'll explain better.

Ordinarily I would be all about Saw but I'm going to Chicago this weekend.

Ordinarily I would be all about a writing group but I'm doing nano in November and thus won't be writing anything that's not crap... but maybe in december I will join up? Hm.

Now Sat I can do :) Count me in for SAW.

Now the writing portion shouldn't be too big a deal, but the reading portion I might not be able to do or keep up with. I'm currently backed up about 6 books, and lately a vast majority of my reading has mostly been work related or news articles (with a bit of manga during train rides to help me keep my sanity). I just wanted to let you know in advance.

Now as for writing, don't worry it's good news, it looks like my background piece should be ready by the Thur meeting (don't worry, I keep my background stuff fun). See you Sat.

Awesome! Looks like I have some writing to do this weekend :) I'll need directions to your place, because somehow I haven't been there yet.

I am psyched about the reading portion of this. My own attempt to start a writing group at work several years ago failed miserably, but I really enjoyed it while it was alive. I also have reservations about being able to keep up with assignments (though I suppose that depends on how often we're actually expecting to meet). I'm halfway through the hefty Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, which would surely be on any list I recommend, and it does seem to be hard for me to carve out reading time these days. I mostly read a lot of short fiction, but I'm behind on everything, including my very formidable and constantly growing pile of books to read.

But I'm willing to give it a shot. Just as I put off writing, if I actually have a book assigned, I'll have to make time to read it, which has to be a good thing.

I won't be able to make it to Saw, but I'd like to see it. Let me know how it is!

Even if it's crap, couldn't you bring your pages to the group? Then maybe we can help make it less crappy :)

Ack, no. Maybe in December. If I try to edit or get critical feedback during November itself it may hinder me on my way to the 50,000 word count and I won't finish because I'll be self-conscious about it sucking.

Is the LJ community just going to be for IRL writing group updates? Cuz me being 900 miles away, that wouldn't be all that useful to me, and I'm currently subscribed to it.

No, it's also work-postable. I think it's fair to say that it would be a better place for re-writes than the group. For example, if you brought something to workshop, made corrections and wanted another go, I'd say post it there first. In your case, just post it there, and I'll try to be good at critiquing, and I hope others will, too.

Yes, a good deal of the posts will be about group meetings, but feel free to shout out anything writing/reading-related, too, contests, readings, seminars, etc. Also, anything extemp is welcome, like if you just have to get down this paragraph and do. Feel free. Using the list more and for more makes it more valuable to us all.

Definitely yes to Saw. I will try to dress up as some version of Illyria, too.

PS: can you offer crash space if we go to a late-late showing and I can't get Ben to pick me up after?

Quick correction above: Writing group messages will be on [livejournal.com profile] ourfiction. Everyone is welcome to use [livejournal.com profile] ourbooks for the reading portion if the group prefers to keep that part separate from the writing; the community itself was meant for book recommendations anyway.

I'm in for Saw.

Also... it's a poor way to make a good impression at our first meeting, but I won't be able to stay too late. Certainly no later than 11, possibly a wee bit earlier. I'm trying to make a 12:01 screening of The Incredibles on Thursday night :)

The rest of the meetings I can stay as late as I need to, because I'll only need to be up for work the next morning!
