Ugh WHAT?

I find out Mickey Rourke will be in Iron Man 2 last night. I am happy and ready for the sequel already.

I find out Scarlett Johansson will replace Emily Blunt as Black Widow in the same movie, and I am totally over it.

Look, the movie is there to be about Robert Downey Jr. being awesome. I get that that will happen no matter what. However, though I didn't think she was awful, Gwyneth Paltrow was the worst actor in Iron Man. (Not bad, but just less good than everyone else despite the fact that she was fairly well written. She and RDJ had great chemistry at least.)

Compared to Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth is Meryl fucking Streep. EPIC FAIL CASTING. And Emily Blunt...oh for what might have been! It's like "Here's a decent actress...oh, no wait, have a punch in the face instead!"

While I agree with you about Mickey Rourke, and about Gwyneth Pallid, I have to disagree about Scarlett Johansson. I think she's a much better actress than Pallid--not that that's saying much.

I do agree, however, that Emily Blunt might have done a better job. Johansson just isn't right for Natasha Romanova. Neither was Eliza Dushku, who was supposedly also up for the role.

A friend suggested Alicia Witt for the role, and I think she would have been great. Olga Kurylenko would have been awesome, and gee, she already has the right accent!

But it's Hollywood. This is what happens. We're just lucky it didn't wind up being Beyoncé.

Ugh, Scarlett cannot act. I will fight to the death on this point. I won't defend Gwyneth normally, but I'll take anyone over Scarlett. Beyonce, too.

Alicia Witt is an old favorite. (Loved her in Cecil B. Demented.) But I do mourn the loss of Emily Blunt. The British are just better than us in every way. Can't we just let them have all the roles?

I freely concede that the fact that I find Scarlett blazingly hot may color my judgment here. Having said that, I do like her in most of the roles I've seen her in, and I like to think I am not being completely swayed by her unearthly beauty.

I like Emily Blunt, and I agree that she's probably a better actress than Scarlett and Pallid put together--which makes sense, seeing as how adding Pallid is definitely a negative--but I'm not sure about her as Natasha. I'd have been willing to watch it, certainly, but I'm just not sure she could pull that one off.

What was wrong with Olga? She's hot, she's Ukrainian, she's been in big-budget action movies already--she was perfect for it!

And no, I wouldn't give all the roles to the Brits. Case in point? Watchmen. We'll discuss after you see it.

You should see Match Point. Also, she was very good in Ghost World.

::scratches head:: Wasn't she the chick in Quantum of Solace?

So she's good in roles where she plays a whiny little annoyance?

I used to like Scarlett Johansson, but she hasn't been in anything remotely interesting since Ghost World/Lost in Translation (and the former was always the better movie). I preferred Emily Blunt, and I think Scarlett is an uninspired choice, but I'll wait until I see the movie.

I liked Gwyneth Paltrow a lot in Iron Man though. I mean, besides having good chemistry with Robert Downey, which made her scenes appealing to me, and being well-written, which is awesome, what exactly is there to complain about?

In case you weren't aware (you didn't mention it here), Emily Blunt was forced to pull out because of Fox, which leaned on a contract option they had on her to get her to be in Jack Black's Gulliver's Travels movie instead. Which is in my estimation lamer than Scarlett Johansson or Gwyneth Paltrow.

Yep. She was also in Hitman and Max Payne. I know, a stellar resume. :) But it shows she can do genre, and that's often a problem.

Naw, that was Thora Birch.

I don't think SJ is so terrible, but since I'm not an actor, and don't have a perfect sense of these things, and since you say you'll fight to the death on this point, I won't push the issue.:)

I thought you'd be happy with the decision. -_^

I will also state here, for the record, that my wife, the ever-wonderful [livejournal.com profile] jendaby, is also blazingly hot.

I'm not sure I've seen Emily Blunt in anything, so I have no idea how she compares to Scarlett.

But Scarlett used to drive me crazy, and now I think she's very pretty and thus marginally watchable. Though really I like Scarlett better in print than on-screen. She should've just been a model.

She, unlike BSG, is not worth really getting into a fight.

I'm not complaining about Paltrow. She's usually so listlessly boring in stuff she's in, but she was quite inspired (especially for her) as Pepper Potts. She held her own against Robert Downey Jr., which I liked.

Poor Emily Blunt. I knew she withdrew because of prior commitments, but a Jack Black movie? Eewww.

Her everything annoys me at this point. Her squeaky voice, her funky lip thing (which we discussed), her everything. Blah.

Emily Blunt was the awesomely bitchy coworker of Anne Hathaway in The Devil Wears Prada. She's fun.

She's also in the really-great-looking Sunshine Cleaning, which sadly for me only opens in LA/NY this weekend, so I have to wait to see it.
