Carrie's friend Anabelle was kind enough to drive us out to a few filming sites for LOTR (and all for the price of petrol!) though Rivendell was closed by the time we got there (damn snobby elves--if you're not in the valley by 4:30, you're not getting in until the next day, one ring or no). Chee! The river is really cool, and Anabelle said that the river actually got flooded when they filmed the Nazgul being overrun by the elf magic. Because it's a dam! Neat! And the river--of course--looks just like it did in the movie and everything. Geeeeee...
Other than that, spent a nice afternoon baking at the octagon (which is a place where people sit and chat), discussed baby-naming with Paul's girlfriend Kat (man, is she into the Celtic stuffs), and determined that I could still name a kid Anastasia and have her name start with "D" if I decide to continue the tradition (Her name would be D'Anastasia or else D-something Anastasia and I'd just use the middle name). Good fun all around at the expense of the American Electoral College, though Sam the Red (the 'Dungeon Master' from Friday) said he liked the Legislative branch at least. This is a concession--in Australia and New Zealand, compliments to anything distinctly American are few and far between.
Yesterday, I went to Te Papa, a nice museum, very modern in its displays, and distinctly inclusive of the Maori (all signs are in English and Maori). Had lots of fun with string (I am easily amused), rubbing a rock to free the greenstone within it, pretending to be in an earthquake, and...uh...rubbing a marble ball (told you, VERY EASILY AMUSED). In fact, I like that marble ball best of all--it's supported by water and you turn it and run your fingers through a thin film of water and it's really smooth so it feels almost like you're not touching it at all...heeeee
