From one rant to another
Jun. 21st, 2005 03:08 pmI ranted about this before, and it's only going to get worse as summer goes on.
Apparently, we're still in a movie-attendance slump. And blame is still being accredited to, and I quote CNN for this, 'a comparatively weak lineup of movies this year.'
I've already made my feelings on the matter quite clear (movies are avoided because they aren't worth the expense any more), but why this argument holds any weight with people worrying over their bottom lines is beyond me. What truly baffles is a statement like that--a 'weak lineup' for 2005? Excuse me?
This is the summer to beat all summers! Back three years ago, Spider-Man came out and basically blew away the box office. You had The Matrix Reloaded and Star Wars: Episode II two years ago that made a decent take. This summer, not only do you have Star Wars: Episode III (which got much better reviews that Ep II), but you have a comic book movie on top of it with reviews better than or equal to those for Spider-Man, Batman Begins. It's set a record for takings in IMAX already.
Don't forget Mr. and Mrs. Smith's rather blockbuster first weekend, dropping only 50% when running against Batman being rather impressive (do I even have to mention that Star Wars is still taking in a hefty few million a week?). And look what's coming up! The culmination of zombie horror in George A Romero's Land of the Dead, the long-delayed movie of a beloved TV show in Bewitched, and there's this movie with Tom Cruise coming out...can't think of the name of it... Don't forget some 'may not be good, but people will see it' films like The Fantastic Four, Wedding Crashers, The Dukes of Hazzard, etc. There are movies out there to see this summer like I can't believe or keep track of.
The point is that this summer there is a bumper crop of enjoyable or at least sufficiently attractive movies for people to see. This summer probably has more than last year even with Spider-Man 2 taken into consideration. Why they can't figure that out....grrrrrrrr. After going to see Batman Begins and paying half my ticket price for a lump of fries that cost about three times what I would have paid for twice as much at Papaya King on the corner, they still can't get it through their stupid skulls.
Why do I doubt that AMC buying Loew's will fix any of this? And speaking of that takeover, how the hell will you tell the two AMCs apart over on 42nd!?
