Most of you were around in one fashion or another, so I won't recount too much. Friday, managed to embarrass myself (again) getting drunk at a near-perfect stranger's house. I'm still not sure how it happened. I was consciously pouring my drinks weaker as the night went on, and, from taste, the first wasn't the strongest in the world. I won't pretend I wasn't aiming to be able to feel my alcohol, but it was not in the plan to lose feeling and mittens of time. I made it to the toilet in the apartment we were visiting but booted on the doorstep of the building on the way out.

I am sincere when I say my drunkenness puzzles me, and not defensive. I had three drinks in total, in a pint-sized glass filled with maybe a shot and a half to a shot of vodka and diluted almost to the top with cranberry, and the amount dwindled as the night went on. That is a lot, three-four shots, I realize that, but over the space of about 4 hours? I had eaten a large dinner, I was eating at the party, too. That, on top of the fact I was drinking vodka in the first place, might explain why I booted. The dipping stuff was garlic-y salsa, something which didn't taste quite right, but was salsa-y enough to make up for it. Either way, I have decided anew that there will be no serious vodka drinkage for the rest of my life. It does not agree with me. If I'm going to imbibe a favorite vodka-cranberry, it'll be one a night from here on out. Maybe it was the garlic salsa, maybe it was the vodka, maybe it was putting the vodka in crystal light at the last drink (ugh, there was a bad idea), who knows.

Another trip to Wal-Mart, much exhaustion had by all who attended--Michelle, BSD, Jordan--but a good game of Boticelli. I got 'strong' points from Jordan for using "Kyle Katarn" on BSD's K character (which I can't recall at present), and Michelle got kudos for "Ky Kiske." Jordan won the night, however, by the most awful question ever for my N character--"Did you become more popular after a part of you died?" The answer was: Nirvana. Oowwwwwww.

Sunday, I drove Carrie, Eugene, and Jordan to the train, spent most of the day half awake, and went to Best Buy with my Dad. That was so hard to make him do, too. ::rolls eyes:: I told him he was impossible to shop for because he dropped money on DVDs so much we couldn't buy him anything more than a week in advance. He denied this, then bought eight DVDs while we were there after going over ever aisle. I shamelessly encouraged because I had my Reward Zone card with me, and hey, I don't get a chance to make him use it much.

I also had my $15 in rebates to use, so I was feeling like picking up something more expensive than my usual splurge. I looked for seasons 1 or 2 of Farscape (Firefly love has really put the burn under my ass to get back into and finish that series), but they only had 3 and 4 and the miniseries. Not a fan of The Peacekeeper Wars (is it just me or was it mostly just really bad cliches all through?), and I didn't love what I'd seen of 3 and never got to 4 at all. Frustrated, I almost bought Firefly myself, but opted for Volume 3 of Batman: the Animated Series instead. I saw Pride and Prejudice, and sparked by my loathing of the trailer for the new one with Keira f-ing Knightly and the $25 price-tag, couldn't pass it by.

I restrained myself from buying American Beauty, another movie-of-the-moment craving, but shouldn't have as, in return for the rebates to use later, my Dad bought me the discs. The lady at the counter told us we could go get the $15 off my dad's card since she failed to scan the rebates sitting right next to the DVDs, but it saved time just to give them to him--he'll have it used in a week, maybe two. I also gave him my Reward Zone card because he's buying a new TV in the near future. I am looking forward to muchos rebate bucks. I will buy the last disc of Zim, maybe some more DVD storage, and Beauty and the Beast (another one stuck in my head of late). Or, I will save for Firefly which I must own eventually.

Mmm, read a lot of Firefly fanfic, mostly of the tolerable despite a search through the GAFF archives to find something to outrage my fandom love. Have yet to find one that's written like an episode, as a lot of what interests the fandom seems to be looking through River's eyes (probably thanks to the wonderful series coda ep "Objects in Space"); getting on with the slash; getting on with the incest (read some good ones of that, too, mostly predicated on River's complete inability to function on a high enough level to realize why it is/should be considered wrong); and pairing off the 'leftover' characters not hinted at relationships/entanglements in the series. I love the canon pairings, don't get me wrong, and enjoyed a few of the romantic stories, but there's all this emphasis on some twagic event bringing out Character X's twu wub for Character Y that is the bane of any fandom's existence and is particularly annoying in so intelligent a series. There have been plenty of tragic/dramatic moments for some of the crew to hook up and launch shuttles, but it ain't happened; there has to be more. I want more character development. I wonder if there's some stasis in the genre while they await the movie.

Speaking of Serenity, does anyone know when it picks up after "Objects in Space"? It's three years now since the show went off the air, and that's a sizeable gap. Then again, week-to-week shows were often so much later that serious injuries were fully healed, several jobs were completed. Timing, in short, isn't going to be predicated on intervening space between canon offerings, but still, curious.

I've discovered that all the Firefly fic I enjoyed was lost in one of my many hard drive failures, so I don't have a clue where any of it was. The best one - and the one I will try to find for you - is based on Simon, after the events of "Ariel," deciding that the only way to make sure that Jayne won't sell them out again is to seduce him. All the characters' motivations rang true in that story, with tragic consequences. Darned if I remember the title/author/archive where I found it, though.

And have you watched the missing scene from "Our Mrs. Reynolds" yet? Fans weren't the only ones getting the incest vibe.

Errr... isn't the movie a prequel?

I don't think so. Why would the crew be involved together if it were? There's talk by Mal of defending River and not handing her over.

It's my understanding that the movie is a few years after Objects in Space. If it were a prequel, it wouldn't have half the cast.

I think the comic picks up six months after the series, and the movie is a year later...something like that. I'm not sure where I got that information from, though.

Serenity is not a sequel, and not a prequel. Essentially, it's a retelling of the same story we've already gotten from the series, only tweaked all to hell cinema-style.

Now, see, that ought to make me nervous, but instead it merely excites me. I watched "Serenity" again this weekend, and it's funny how quickly I took for granted the whole crew. They fall in together so well. Should be fun. It also should make more sense out of how River's suddenly a ninja as the trailer seemed to show.

It excites me, too; almost as if the film is more of a...challenge. I don't know if that makes sense, but it's a good way to condense down for newcomers. Obviously for those of us who've seen the series it will be a bit painful to see longstanding relationships/character development be squashed into two hours, but at the same time it will be nice to get a payoff on questions all in one go.

My reserve when it comes to this sort of action stems from the fact that remixes don't often work so hot. I hear about Utena from friends, wasn't overly fond of some of the changes to Escaflowne, and generally displeased about several recent comic book adaptations. However, that said, sometimes things work just fine and I shouldn't worry. I want to believe in the latter. With Joss Whedon having more total control over it, it won't be the Buffy movie (enjoyable in its own right).

Heh heh, sounds like you have your own variation on my infamous karaoke night. No worries then.

I'll draw up a list of DVDs and you can make a request (if I can control myself and not just go and buy movies before I get out your way). Yay Farscape-age. Did Darryl make you watch or were you a good geek and liked it before?
