The Top Ten Things that Make the Melbourne University Student Union ROCK THE WORLD of Alfred Lerner Hall:
10) The food court
Pan-Asian, Veggie, Indian, Fried, Donuts, Bubble Tea (it comes sealed here! like a plastic sheathe and everything)--let's just say that Cafe 212 can kiss off.
9) The bar
There is a bar. In the Student Center. A full bar. Need I say more?
8) Lounges
As in there are more places to crash and more comfortable than you'd ever imagine, some of them. The seating ranges from cafeteria style for games, studies, or food to bean bags and couches.
7) The clubs
Only here can you have a club called Friends of Unnatural Llamas (f.o.u.l.) and a society shamelessy named MORE BEER. Two points if you can guess what they do at meetings. Also, they serve beer at free BBQs. And the names are great, like Weekly Watchers of Wonderful Anime. And there's a specifically Douglas Adams society--Cosmic Hitchhiker's or something like that. Rock out man!
6) The arcade
Jordan, you would love it. There's every version of Street Fighter that I could name, more too! there's king of fighters, a racing game or two, that Police training game, it's got lots and lots to play. All it needs is House of the Dead or that underwater game, and I'd be set for life.
5) Movies!
Okay, yeah, we got Ferris Reel. They have MOVIES here. I mean, like showings all the time, twice a week, not including the Rowden library stuff. Bowling for Columbine is a hit over here, so I'll be seeing that Wednesday for sure. AND AND AND!!! Later in August, THERE IS GOING TO BE A MATRIX/MATRIX RELOADED DOUBLE FEATURE NIGHT. I nearly died when I read that. Then I remembered I'd miss it if I was dead, and came back. I hope Carrie is here for that on her break *grins maniacally.* Dear god, they're also selling posters here for the week in the Buffet hall (which has been renamed the Buffy hall with a paper Y pasted over the 'et'--Buffy's huge here), and man, there are LOTR: ROTK posters...*dies* They had signs saying "Work for your posters, ask us how" and depending on how well it pays, I might do it. I have to get a work visa, which would cost me, but hey, a job, money coming in instead of only ever going out, and selling posters and/or getting them cheap? Holy hell that's fantastic. If I get that job, you guys need to make requests. International posters are almost always better than home ones.
Ahem, back to the count down...
The rest is technically cheating because they're all aspects of one room here, but I'm going to use that anyway:
4-1: THE ROWDEN WHITE LIBRARY
4) Music plays in this library
I walked in on Weezer's "Sweater Song," and in the noisy area, people are freely noisy. See my current music to hear what's going on. There are chairs with headphones to sit in and just rock out to if you choose.
3) Movies can be watched and rented from here. Oh, books too.
Yessss, free things! Also, you can watch the Aussie stuff here you can't play at home because the Unilodge hates me and wants to charge $10 a night in addition to the tape rental fee for a VCR. And they advertise the sci-fi section here, gonna check that out soon.
2) Games can be played on the computers.
See "Current Music" again. That's right, geeks this is your home. Come in and play D2 for an hour (you can only sign up for an hour at a time), play anything you want, so long as it's on the computer, it's fair, well, game.
1) COMIC BOOK AND MANGA SECTION
This is what makes the R-W library the coolest library ever. I got to sit and read something called Gloomcookie, which was a fun goth-ish comic, all b+w, and Roman Dirge got a Lenore tribute in it (a character wears a Lenore shirt and he drew a page for the back to support the comic). It's not well organized, but let me repeat: THERE ARE COMIC BOOKS AND MANGA IN THIS LIBRARY. AND PEOPLE READ THEM! It's great. it's like being in a more comfortable Midtown. Sit down with a book, and listen to music or what have you. I forsee many an interesting hour spent between classes here.
