Waaaah, I am still in recovery from Friday's Battlestar Galactica and all a-flustered that I won't be able to watch the coming episode until the Monday after at the earliest because I'll be rah-rahing for my sister in Florida (those of you who don't know: she's a cheerleader, and her team is going to nationals). Damn it all. I did spend two hours Sunday getting the story I had based on the episode out of my head, but it totally warped on me and went somewhere else entirely, while still sorta getting out what I needed to get out.

Saturday, I went to my friend's birthday drinks and dessert at her apartment, and ivy03 gamely tagged along (I owe you one, I'll see about that favor, m'kay?), and Sunday I utterly ignored the Super Bowl in favor of the Puppy Bowl. Actually, it was more like the Puppy Bowl Halftime Show that I went in for. My friend, Liz M, found me online and demanded I go turn on the tube to Animal Planet and then I just sat like a squeeeee-ing lump as five or six kittens jumped around on a multi-platform stage in the middle of a fake football field. Oh god, too cute! The puppies were meh, and I wasn't going to watch an hour of them (the kittens, I might have), so I watched more Battlestar Galactica with the roommate (she likes it! she really likes it!) and my Netflix movie du-jour, The Three Amigos (I seem to remember it being funnier, but there were some parts that were still dynamite).

And something random from this weekend: You know when you find out that someone with one particular accent in fact was born with a different one, and the one he/she naturally has is way cuter than the one that he/she pretended to have? (Good example, even though he can sound like a bit of a poof, is our dear Apollo)

Well, such is not the case with Hugh Laurie. I sorta knew this from what I'd seen of him in Black Adder, but I watched a couple of episodes of Jeeves and Wooster (I think that's what it's called, that's what ivy03 calls it anyway) and maaaaaaaaa-aaa-aaa-aaan...

Let's just say I'll be glad of House coming back this week, even though I might miss half of it--silly book club!

I love "Jeeves and Wooster!" I knew Hugh Laurie from any number of British sitcoms and movies and was very familiar with his real speaking voice. It took me at least three episodes of "House" to come to grips with his American accent. I kept thinking, "Hugh Laurie is pretending to American - so cute!"

Heh, I like that, rumor has it, Hugh Laurie auditioned for the role of House and the producer got all excited because he heard the American accent and thought it was more real than anything else he'd heard, not realizing Hugh's a Brit.

I like his growly American voice, it adds to his gruff character. His foppy British accent can't hurt Wooster, though...

For a while watching House to me was like watching a Japanese dub. Because that's just not Hugh Laurie's voice. And House has all the same foppish facial ticks - like the squinching of the nose and such. I obviously prefer Bertie to House, but I'm easy. I'll watch either.

I noticed that, too, especially the eyes-to-the-ceiling, scrunching-up-the-nose bit. It's just funnier when it's coming out of a guy who's so clearly aware that he's giving an impression that he's an asshole than it is when it's being done by a genuine idiot.

By the by, I haven't gotten set off on my slash meter at all. Mostly, I suspect it's because I don't see gay, I see English...

Well, you don't have the slash goggles welded on like I do. And yes, they are very British. You have to at least see the life-partners thing, though.

Oh, partners in crime is more like it. Really, it's fairly adorable. I'm just a bit wigged that House's butler is Oscar Wilde, ignore me.

However, it couldn't hurt to have the voice of the Book as your valet either (and how giggly am I that they are so determinedly British about pronouncing that T? Very!)

Oh, sorry, Stephen Fry was the voice of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in the 2005 movie. Not the original, but he deserves the honorific nonetheless.

Well, wouldn't you be a sadist if you had to work for Bertie? Honestly, subtle torture of the upper class is probably his only release for frustration...

Oh hell, I know how that last sentence sounds, but not what I meant!

Oh, sorry, sorry, was going Monstrous Regiment on you there. There's a bunch of girls pretending to be guys, and the lead is told by a mysterious voice that she'd be less spotty in her male routine if she stuffed her pants with socks. From then on, she basically starts feeling "socky" or possessed of a vague "sockiness" and really wishes some wilting flower types would just get/grow a pair of socks, etc.

It's how my brain works, go figure.

The grumpiest British character I've seen him play is the hen-pecked Mr. Palmer from "Sense and Sensibility" - plenty of cutting looks, sacrastic comments, and hiding behind the newspaper.

Oh lord, I only remembered that a few weeks ago, and dear me, what a great performance he put in for all three seconds he was in the movie. Really, comic, grousy genius, that bit.
