I rented Suicide Club, a movie I vaguely had heard of before and that was recommended to me via Netflix because I rented Audition. I'm really getting tired of these movies ending without making sense at all. Suicide Club started out interesting enough, with an eerily cheerful group of girls charging to their deaths at a subway platform. Then there's this random Japanese Dr. Frank-N-Furter-wannabe scene in the middle (complete with singing randomly), then children...WTF?

What's funny to me is that I recognized the guy who was the victim in Audition as the cop in Suicide Club. And Lisa kept calling a character named Shibu "Shibby," so, thanks Dude, Where's My Car? for making it impossible to take the movie seriously. And another thing: Japanese movies waste too much time on following every small step that's acted out. We don't need to see the girl try to get out the gate then fail and then go find the guard to let her out after taking the long elevator ride down; edit, Japanese auteurs! Edit!

And LOST tonight...whew, almost missed it because of that stupid movie...

Man, I had just gotten around to going, "Boy, am I glad the Charlie was severely reduced in this ep," when he popped up. First genius use of Charlie in the whole series, you ask me. And I heart Sawyer mightily, but I'm utterly confused as to why he would seek to hoarde the guns himself. He started basically giving away his stash in season one, so there wasn't any reason based on pack-ratting alone to get them. If he wants to avoid getting shot by them, I would point out that trusting Charlie to hide the weapons wasn't the best idea. There has to be a better reason than pissing on Jack, sneaking around Locke, et al. I give him major props for having the relationships on the isle all worked out--he's like a fan of the show or something.

No, he's in it for the long con, but I'm blasted if I know what that is. I'm a little shocked (and I thought it was a little out of character) that he got Charlie to jump Sun. He and Jin are (and I refuse to believe he's been faking it the whole time) close, and I have to think respect for what they went through together would keep him from doing that unless there were no other way (why not jump someone else? someone less important?). He went after Michael, too, so I don't buy the "I don't give a shit about anybody" attitude. Where's the sudden reversal come from? Or has the long con been his every step (despite the perils to his health when he passed out) since the raft? gaaaahhhh

Sawyer reminded me of an episode of "Designing Women" I saw recently on Lifetime while I was sick in bed. In the episode, Anthony adopts a Little Brother that had been in trouble with the law. Julia offers the Little Brother a part time job, saying something like "children become what we expect of them." Well, Little Brother holds up a gas station and ends up in JV. Anthony is going to wash his hands of the whole thing, but Julia convinces him to go and check up on Little Brother in JV. See the whole thing was a test!! Little Brother wanted to see if Anthony would leave just like everybody else.

I think part of Sawyer's motivation is to test Kate - to see what she'll do when faced with the 'real' Sawyer. If she gives up on him, it will validate his idea of himself as a con man.

Ugh, if he's doing this just to impress Kate, I'm going to be sick. I'd like to think that there is still some higher purpose going on. Perhaps Jack doesn't know it, but Sawyer is doing him and Ana-Lucia that favor they weren't williing to do themselves...

Still, I'm fairly horrified they'd go after Sun. Why not Libby? She's pretty vulnerable-female type. And there are about thirty other as-yet-unpaid-attention-to people who would be "us" enough to...sigh. It just seems really out of character for either Charlie or Sawyer.

The Japanese also made some horror movie called Executive Koala which is some violent horror movie about a guy who works in an office and has a koala head. And I don't think it's intended to be funny.

I keep reccomending Oldboy, but the ending is really extreme...plus, it's Korean. Nobody Knows is a good Japanese movie, but it's one of the saddest, most tragic films I've ever watched. And it's slow, too.

To date, about the only Japanese live-action movie I've enjoyed was Battle Royale (and I use the term "enjoyed" to mean "thought was good," not "found it joyful-making).

I am burnt out on subtitles at the present, but might revisit some of these another time. That's what Netflix is for!
