Oooooh....
Dec. 7th, 2003 10:14 pmAnd NOT in the good way. If the rest of my trip in Fiji is this aggravating, I'm scrapping the whole thing.
Good God. Took me AN HOUR to get a cab in Cairns because, despite the fact that the number is on the side of cabs in Cairns, the number for Cairns Cabs kept being routed to the main place in SYDNEY. I'd get some smartass operator, he'd say, no, try the directory assistance. Try them, get new number, get routed to Sydney again. Bitch at people in Sydney who basically hang up on me insisting that it is somehow my fault that their system, by their own admission, sometimes just routes calls to Sydney. I'm in CAIRNS, I want a bloody taxi in CAIRNS. Bitch at directory assistance for some mythical 8-digit number that would be Cairns-specific (as I was told by my dear friends in Sydney I needed), and was then told without the specific name of the company, I'm buggered. GROWL. Saga continued with me asking for help at hostel, getting funny look from guy there when I said the number didnt work, then being totally frustrated as all hell when he said he'd ordered one for me on the spot, not for 4:30 am when I needed it. Was then looked at as an IDIOT because I tried to arrange for a cab prior to the immediate time I needed it. Thanks, soooooooo much, but we actually have done that in places, believe it or not. CIVILIZED countries allow for pickups at given times. Then got like three hours sleep (it was 1 am at this point), got up, didnt trust calling card so used coin and got cab in five minutes. Mood not improved.
Get to Sydney only to miss Dana's call, run out of credit on my mobile and calling card, AND checking account. Did I mention, when all was said and done, they charged me close to $400 extra for my rerouting? Oh, and joy of joys, no Qantas to or from Fiji for me. Air Pacific. Compared to Qantas? Substandard at best. Should have gone to Auckland, would at least have gotten Air NZ, almost Qantas worthy.
Arrive, loose kangaroo jerky at customs (was meant to be gag gift for people at home), directed over to travel agent I did not want and given room for tonight and then NAGGED for an hour while waiting for the bus to pick me up. First it was delayed, then it came and WENT, then I insisted we wait in the lot for it. An hour. I'm soooo tired. The woman was soooo pushy. They get huge commissions here for signing you up and she was ready to book me for every dive tour in the Yasawas and planes to the further islands to boot. Grrrrrr. For an HOUR. On three hours sleep, the burden of no Qantas in my future, then the hostel. So ghetto, I don't know where to begin. Cold showers only, daggy bathroom with ants all over, ONE key for 7 people (which I have now and don't care that I do), and I'll have two flights to carry my bags down. Promptly booked lodging for tomorrow elsewhere, a single deluxe hotel accomodation, $55 Fiji (half that in US).
Keep repeating: must go diving, hang in there for the diving, there's diving in my immediate future, cheap, wonderful, fun, safe, great, beautiful diving. If I come home minus any Fiji culture, I'll be THANKFUL at this point because I couldn't give a shit. I'm off to bed...
