Yeah, I heard about this. What-the-ever, USA. Aren't we the ones who despise monopolies? Or are supposed to? How come the EU has to do all the trust-busting these days?
I think their belief is that the extortionist income a monopoly can command is a just reward for running a successful business. Having recently finished reading The Wealth of Nations, I can safely say that these guys are not capitalists in the classical sense.
As for "trust-busting", Dubya is no Teddy Roosevelt, that's for sure.
Let's go down the list in that section: 1. Sued corporations instead of backing them unequivocally. 2. Was very active instead of being on vacation over 50% of the time. 3. Desired press attention instead of dodging it at every turn. 4. Pushed conservation instead of oil drilling in nature preserves. 5. Sent doctors and construction crews to 3rd world nations instead of soldiers. 6. Negotiated ends to wars instead of starting them.
Am I missing anything? The party seems to have changed quite a bit in 100 years. (I also haven't yet read the main article, linked at the top, so there's probably a lot that I'm missing.)
Le sigh. These are the self-same Republicans, all right. That's why I can't hate my uncle who's a Republican because he's a classic Republican in the sense of small government and wooo! states' rights!
A la Virginia Slims: The Republican party? You've come a long way, baby.
But let's not forget we're hardly more indebted to them than we are the Democrats for being a bunch of pansies and letting them stomp all over rights and what not...
