There is an article in the NYT about Zombies. My day has come! It even has "ZOMBIES" in the URL. I win at life!

Also, just because I haven't commented on them doesn't mean I don't appreciate all the laptop suggestions and speculations people left on my journal last week. I am perusing them and keeping things in mind, so THANK YOU for whatever advice you had to offer. At this point, I'm still just working out what I need vs what I can afford.

The number one thing I need, I've decided, is a laptop that will last longer than 4 years. I'm thinking 5-6 year territory, and that would be worth paying extra for (I assume I'll be paying extra for warranties and the like, but as I've proven with my last two laptops, I can use a machine just fine for about a year after the warranty ends, so three-year warranties aren't very helpful if the machine only lasts as long).

Really, I hate having to move my shit to new computers. Hate it. New computer, ooooh shiny! But moving all my files? MURDERDEATHKILL. I've had to do it often enough when getting my HP notebook back from the nth fix it got. So, bearing that in mind, any other revelations about laptops for me?

not sure if anyone else has had the same thought, but back when I used to need to switch desktops almost every other year, I would use a parallel port cable to transfer all of my harddrive from one to the other compy. Esp when I didn't have room in the old tower to just slave the old HD to the new one.

I think that nowadays, you could do that with firewire or USB from old laptop to new, no? Make it alot easier to just say, "Move all files on HDD from HP to HDD on new laptop." right?

Since they have a home network in their apartment, it's even easier than that. The really annoying part is usually reinstalling software and resetting user preferences and stuff, because that is all not easily copied.

Yeah, I have been there more than a few times. Esp with the older stuff.

Amen to that, sir. I get nervous swapping my favorites from IE to Firefox. Sheesh.

But if I make the break to Apple this time around, I may not have so much to worry about. It's sounding more tempting all the time.

Once again: Apple for t3h win! They have tools that come free with their stuff to let you migrate to OSX. This is especially targetted at current PC users (it's part of their switch campaign).

I'm sure other companies provide similar services, but I don't know anything about them.

I've heard about that software/service, yeah. I think it's only if you get it through retail, though, and I will definitely be doing my best to bitch the discount we get through here (if I can).

I've not heard about file transfer stuff with PCs, actually. But then I haven't been looking.

It's not only through retail. It's a piece of software that sits on your machine. I used it when I got my G5 (which I bought through the education store).

Columbia actually gets special discounts sometimes (on top of regular education pricing, which you qualify for as a Columbia employee). I can forward you the emails they (still) send me if you'd like.

it sounds to me like you need a mac. but, one easy way to avoid the whole transferring thing, is to buy an external hard drive. it's a good thing to have anyway in case your computer should crash, and that way you can plug it into any computer. go to pricewatch, you can get an 80gig for about 60 bucks.

I actually have an external hard drive, so the drive space on a laptop isn't one of my search criteria biggies. I've got a 160 GB hard drive that has some 80 GB still free, I think. The problem is I tried to let the thing backup using the program that will do period backups and compare/contrast what's been there before vs what's new so you don't have to etc etc, and then I just ended up dragging and dropping files to the thing because I didn't trust the program and didn't run it often enough. So now I've got to go back and figure out what's been duplicated and get rid of it.

The point is not that I can't do it pretty easily, I sure can, but that I don't want to have to do it. Even with USB 2.0 and firewire or any of those things, it'll still take hours to get all 20 GB of music to and fro and then figuring out what things to put on the...

I'll spare you. Rar rar rar rar rar, basically.
