You know, I was gonna be all huffy about Dell possibly not shipping my computer out until next Wednesday (I will probably still be sorta huffy), but I have to say they do their best to explain why this should be. I wish I'd known that it wasn't going through to my credit card ahead of time so I could have used it yesterday on the money I spent for my Dad's birthday gift, too.

But I forsee a new internet wasting-time-type diversion: constantly refreshing my order status to see if the computer checklist gets to "Boxing" any time soon. Dell breaks it up as "Order Processing," followed by "Pre-production," which is then subdivided into the "In Production" categories: Kitting, Build, Testing, and Boxing. I assume "Boxing" is actually packaging the machine to ship to me versus putting it in its casing, as it doesn't do much good to test a machine without all of its parts assembled and covered as they are to be used.

But then there is the "Shipping Prep" part of this, too...mmm, puzzling. Maybe I should refresh the page...

A week seems pretty standard, but the phrasing on my purchase order was "shipping on or before" and I think I did get it earlier than they stated. Of course, [livejournal.com profile] hslayer can attest to the fact that your mileage may vary, but I think his issue with their customer service was more unique. You'll have your new toy in no time!

Best news is that I can take the laptop away with me again this weekend if I can figure out how to make the one my Dad is borrowing from work...well, work. I think it's the password for the wireless network that's giving him trouble. I'll need to sort that out.

Yeah, my server took a freaking MONTH and they couldn't even tell me why, but that seemed anomalous. My laptop took far less time than their estimate...any faster and I would've had to duck. :P Okay, that might be an overstatement, but it was quick. I, too, enjoyed constantly refreshing my order status, but don't be surprised if you miss it. Both mine have been built while I slept, as their factory runs 24 hours, 365 days.

My experience with dell is that they promise low, deliver high. Every time I'be bought a computer, I've gotten it a week or two before they said I would.

I would actually be surprised if they tested it in the final casing - they're probably just testing the motherboard and other such parts outside of the casing, which would be quicker.

I dont think they are testing the casing, per se, but rather the components compiled within it. It doesn't make sense to test each part seperately and then not do so again with them working in concert beneath the case. 'S all I'm sayin'.

It's important to do both.

The boxing stage involves kangaroos, I swear.

Awesome. I got this totally cool boxing kangaroo pen for a friend when I was in Australia. You can never underestimate the power of a kangaroo--for good or for evil.

I had the same thing happen. Got my laptop almost a full week early, minus some asshattery at Lerner.
