Our kittens might just kill me with the cute. When I went in this morning to put ice cubes in their water dish (they get a kick out of playing with them, and it keeps the water cool, which, on this already beastly hot day, they'll need), they were all over me. I sat down, and Wally kept trying to jump up closer to my head. Whenever I pick him up to cuddle, I hold him up over the BCDs and nuzzle with him. I found it indescribeably adorable that he wants to be at my neck/face whenever he's climbing on me. Oscar, not to be left out, jumped right up on my legs, too. They were both purring inside of a second. This assuages some of my fears that they loved their other mommies better.

I am so going home at lunch to take another thousand pictures of them being cute beyond all measure. It's worth braving the beastly heat for. Honestly, at this point, [livejournal.com profile] arcane_the_sage isn't the only one tempted to hibernate until the worst of summer is over. Personally, I like warmer weather better than colder--I can go outside and swim and eat ice cream with impunity. However, it's been so hot the last couple of days (and today, and possibly tomorrow), that I can't even keep up with my coping mechanisms. The fan is only blowing hot air on me, the freezer can only make so much ice when we keep it open to cool our faces, showers only left my hair wet for half as long, and my stomach can only take so much water. Yesterday, for writing group, I literally drank myself too full to cool down with more water.

My poor, poor kitties. I hope they are staying cool.

Warm is fine. Warm is good. But without AC, anything over 90 for more than a day is just too damn much.

[identity profile] trinityvixen.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. Stupid global warming. For all that it saves us heating costs in winter, this is stupid hot right now and is readily made up for the expense in AC and fans, damn it all. I need to steal the 4 degree room from my work and bring it home. Roll around in there, some.

[identity profile] jlc.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I damn near got up and moved to the server room at work last night. We've got a futon in the storage room, and I could've brought a blanket and been in wonderful 65 degree climate control all night long...

As is, I just kept drinking water nonstop and STILL felt dehydrated in the morning.

[identity profile] trinityvixen.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It's giving me headaches, the heat. I need to drink more than water to rebuild electrolyte imbalances, methinks. I drink juice, which helps, but the soda-drinking's gotta be put on hold until my head doesn't hurt just from living outside of work...

[identity profile] ivy03.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I felt like a poached egg when I left last night. I was literally sitting there fantasizing about the subway ride where I could cool off. That's when you know you're in bad shape. I took a shower with the dial all the way to cold and it still felt warm for me. Blech. My office needs to invest in showers. I was gross again by the time I got to work.

[identity profile] trinityvixen.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel for you, I do. I really was a second away from advertising that we should go to like wendy's or something for that night and definitely not at our place again until it's cooler.

I have to change out of anything I want to wear more than once whenever I get home from work or else it'll be too stinky and sweaty for me to do so. I also need to stash deodorant in my desk drawer for after the walk to and from home at lunch time.

You might seriously consider, I don't know, buying an air conditioner?

[identity profile] trinityvixen.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
My mother offered us a window unit that my aunt had sent her, but there's not really a place for it in our place. The one room we could have an AC fit with the window is in the office. Our place is really too big to be cooled effectively with an AC.

Plus, ask your lovely fiancee about what happened to an AC in the building just last night...

[identity profile] jethrien.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I really don't think that your building is cursed. Just because one air conditioner came crashing down from five stories up doesn't mean they all will.

Seriously, though, other people seem to have managed - you really might want to think about it. For the kittens, if nothing else - they seemed so ridiculously hot in their little fur coats.

[identity profile] trinityvixen.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I was informed that they are probably more comfortable in the heat than we, and that's probably true. So long as I keep the water cool, and the food plentiful, they'll be okay.

I guess I could consider getting the AC for the office room, but it wouldn't help us in the living room (where all the fun shit is) or the bedrooms (where we sleep) overly much. And, again, the roomies and I are cash-strapped. Better to see how much our fan usage and newly enlarged living space costs us in utilities before we add to the expense.

[identity profile] jethrien.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
True, I guess.

Have you tried putting pans of water in front of fans? I've heard that can help sometimes.

[identity profile] trinityvixen.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a thought. It might make a mess, but hey, we've been doing that. I sat in the living room with ice cubes on my head and got soaked through.

[identity profile] mephistakitten.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Hearing about your kittens makes me happy. =)

Don't you find that your lab is absolutely freezing in comparison?

I keep thinking that I'm in NYC and can just pop down to see you guys. =(

[identity profile] trinityvixen.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, where I sit in the lab isn't too cool. It's just about right, maybe mid-to-low seventies. If I get too cold, I have a sweater, but that's not happened at my desk (for some reason, our section of the lab is warmer than other places in the same room). In the cell culture it gets cool, but I like to take that chill home with me a ward against the heat.

cooling off

Take advice from a pro. Leave a quart of gatorade in the fridge till you get home. Once home throw it in the freezer for about a half hour. It should be nice and slushie by then. Chug (try and avoid the brain freeze if possible). That's the fastest way to cool off when coming in from this kind of weather. For me it keeps me good for about 30 min. For a normal person maybe 1-2 hours.

Re: cooling off

[identity profile] trinityvixen.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I find that chugging doesn't really help me. A cold drink finished in about ten to fifteen minutes will only last about as long again before I start to notice that I'm warming up.

Gatorade might be a good idea for the headache problem, though. I would like to avoid the headaches getting worse to the point of medication (I take enough advil around that time of the month as is).

[identity profile] jethrien.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
That does sound like a good idea - remember, you're not just losing water when you sweat. Make sure you're replacing the salt, too.

Re: cooling off

[identity profile] trinityvixen.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I try to--god knows I like salty things. I have crackers and wheat thins. I supplement the water with fruit juice, too, which helps.

I'm going to take this advice to mean I need more french fries in my life. Pizza, too.

[identity profile] hslayer.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't worry about the kitties staying cool.

Oh, that makes me feel much better, thank you! I really mean that. These are my babies, and I am totally in crazy mothering mode worrying over how much the one eats, how the other is sneezing a lot, and so on. I'm glad I don't have to worry overly about the heat, because it is just beastly.

Now all I have to worry about is them being cold in winter, but I will keep them warm...with love!

... when can I come play with them?

[identity profile] trinityvixen.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you free next week? Maybe Monday? I'll be in Westchester for the weekend, as you know, probably coming out Friday, and I won't be home before late night any day left this week (class, apartment shopping). But on Sunday I'm going to try to move the big TV to the apartment, so you could ride in with that group, maybe?

[identity profile] viridian.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
... buh? Um, I didn't know you'd be up here, but cool?

Yeah, I could probably do Sunday or Monday perhaps.

[identity profile] trinityvixen.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Aren't you having guests Saturday?

I'll let you know :)

Are we?

Ummmm...

Oh, hell. Is Ben's birthday this weekend? Shit.

Would have been nice if I'd remembered that before I spent all the money I'm going to have this month on DC.

[identity profile] trinityvixen.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
what were you doing in DC, by the by?

[identity profile] saikogrrl.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Be like Homer and pitch a tent in front of the open fridge. XD

[identity profile] trinityvixen.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Roommate Liz has done something similar with the freezer. It just makes it hard for me to get more ice and popsicles. :)
