-I've gone and done it. I've gone and examined deep into the Pit of Voles for Superman Returns fic and come out with eyes bloodied, soul tarnished, all that jazz. That said, I'm terribly fond of a series of little poignant, if predictable and overly cute vignettes by Darth Stitch. For all two of you who both liked Superman Returns and also happen to read fanfic (i.e. [livejournal.com profile] dotsomething and [livejournal.com profile] alizzy), you'd probably enjoy those vignettes.

-I had a conversation with the departing post-doc about Superman Returns. He didn't care for it, especially not Kate Bosworth. I definitely agree she was a weak point. It's something that in my agonized Smallville watching (see the next point) that I've at least come to peace with--I think Smallville Lois is actually pretty good. Okay, What. The. F. is she doing in Smallville in the first place, fine, but she's really good. Teri Hatcher good. Margot Kidder good maybe. I like Lois and Clark's friction on Smallville, as it provides some of the only good snappy banter to be had, and they aren't too ham-handed about their future together, thank god.

-I said it at writing group last night, and I'll say it again: any episode of Smallville from season five without James Marsters in it is torture. Kudos to [livejournal.com profile] darkling1 for the assist with the episodes, and I'm grateful for getting to revisit an old favorite pasttime (ah for those days sophmore year where we watched Buffy and Smallville and had a good two hours of suite bonding). Whenever Brainiac-to-be comes on, things are interesting, smart things are said, and I don't want to put a nail gun to my own brain over how bad dialogue, acting, and plot (an unholy trifecta of pain) has gotten to be on this show.

Okay, so none of those things were ever brilliant, and clearly we just got tired of the vague and not-so allusions to Clark's future. Still, ouch. Saying season five of Smallville is light years better than four just makes me want to curl up into a ball and die at the mere thought of watching any more episodes from season four than I've already seen. I've read a bunch of TWoP recaps from season five that make similar allusions, and I weep.Any one know if Marsters is going to be back for season six? I have some interest in seeing how the season finale stuff will all shape up (I should actually watch the season finale instead of just reading the TWoP review), especially if he'll factor into it.

-Lois and Clark is such a guilty pleasure. I want to sit down and watch all of the rest of season two with [livejournal.com profile] feiran like every time we manage to find time to watch one episode. It's soooooo deliciously silly and downright awful at times, I can't help but love it. Smallville takes itself so seriously, it's nice to see the sheer ridiculousness of Dean Cain in tights falling through sets obviously made of tearaway glass and plywood to break up the melodrama. When Lois and Clark dips into melodrama, it's not so fun. Fortunately, most of that comes in the later seasons which I won't be exposed to again any time soon.

-Thinking about the episode "Knight Time" of the animated series of the Batman/Superman Adventures always makes me happy. That's just it, it does. [livejournal.com profile] jethrien, when you need a break from life stuff, do enjoy it. I rewatch it every other week to keep me giggling.

Other superhero watch stuff:
-The post-doc in my lab saw Superman Returns this past weekend, but cared more about seeing the trailer for Spider-Man 3 on the big screen. While talking about how awesome he thought that was, he got goose bumps. Talking about Spider-Man 3 gives him goosebumps. This is weird and kind of endearing at the same time.

-JK Simmons says he's got less screen time as J.Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man 3. Pause now for a moment of sorrowful silence that this is so. Hold out hope that Raimi is, indeed, interested in more sequels still and might yet involve J.J. in more adventures.

- The Transformers movie (not to be confused with Transformers: the Movie, which was actually fun) is going to suck, isn't it? And no, I'm not just getting that from the latest Penny Arcade. I watched the promo trailer again. Oh dearie my, no.

-Jon Favreau is doing Iron Man. Uh, okay? Where's the interest? Why him? What angle are they going to take? Batman Begins beat them to the "rich guy fights crime" angle...

-I need to buy the first two volumes of Batman: the Animated Series on DVD. That's not really news, just that I only just now realized that without my old roommate, I have only the third volume. How sad for me.

So people REALLY think that the Transformers trailer relays any information whatsoever about the movie? It shows NOTHING. AT ALL. I dunno...

It shows an attempt to make Transformers "relevant." THEY ARE GIANT FUCKING ROBOTS WHAT TURN INTO CARS. Stop making it "current." Stop trying to make it "possible." Allow it to be cheese and get over it.

Yeah, that's fair. If they were to make Optimus Prime into something besides a giant truck, I'd guess it would be a Hummer. But maybe Megatron would be the Hummer, since it's baaaaad in addition to being badass.
