In lighter news (because I could use some), I watched Spider-Man last night. I've not seen that in maybe two years. Spider-Man 2 was soooo good, and that's what's been on more often than not. It's like the X2 phenom at my house: my dad has some crazy bent for sequels that he doesn't for the originals (he saw Spider-Man 2with my sister and I in the theaters!), so that's what we watch.

Now, I won't argue that X-Men was better than X2 (far from it), nor that Spider-Man was better than Spider-Man 2 (for the same reason). But the originals have their charm. Yes, Tobey Maguire is ten years too old to be going to high school. Yes, there's the dumb "Woe is me, my life is not a happy story!" narration. Don't forget the strangely creepy "Can I take your picture?" spider-bite scene, or Aunt May's hysterics after being attacked by the Green Goblin (and then being miraculously fine a day later--no post-traumatic stress for that old lady).

But it was really fun, and that's what I remember. I remember seeing Spider-Man as the May Movie (wooo!!! Spider-Man 3 will also be a May Movie!) and all of us Columbia folk geeking out like mad the second the credits came up. BSD and Pooch poo-pooing the change to give Peter his own webbing (liek ZOMG, HOW WILL THEY MAKE THE BLACK COSTUME DIFFERENT!?!) et al. Calling Harry Osbourne "Johnny McSquinty." All that jazz and razmattaz. Bruce Campbell! Lucy Lawless! Ted Raimi! J.J.! J.J.! J.J.!

The romance schmaltz was unbearable, perhaps, the USA #1#1#1#1!!!!! bit at the end a tad dated, but we still got a good Peter Parker, a suitably flexible superhero, and a helluva a ride out of it. Now, if only Sam Raimi can finish on a high note (and thus not fall into the X-Men: the Last Stand, last-act malaise problem), I'd be well an truly pleased. It's just nice to have fun with a superhero movie again (what with all the angsting and drama of late), I'd almost forgotten how nice it was.

Spider-Man is damned entertaining, isn't it? It's just fun. Yes, there's the serious stuff, and when Peter is trying to tell Aunt May about what happened to Uncle Ben, I ached, but the rest of it? Flying around the city has never been so fun!
