I bought the second volume of Batman: the Animated Series this weekend, and today's the first time I've gotten to pop one of the discs in. Methinks I will do this every day I can for lunch--that's how I got through the animated Superman series so quickly. So, for lunch today, instead of editing the stories for my class, I watched the BTAS episode "Eternal Youth."

Things that stuck out for me:
-Alfred has a girlfriend. Okay, an older ladyfriend, but he gets booty. This is of the good. Where she goes for every other episode of the series? Mystery.

-Poison Ivy uses the term "Gallery of Rogues" to describe the villains (herself included, really) that Batman fights. I find it funny that the term is used within the Batman series itself and not just about the characters in the series. Is that meta or what?

-Batman says that Ivy has "the convictions of a fanatic." Pot, I'd like you to meet Kettle; Kettle, Pot.

Eternal Youth is one of my absolute favorite episodes. I love it! Even if Alfred's friend is absurd. Because - Bruce worrying over Alfred! So sweet! (Also acknowledging that Bruce is in charge of a multinational corporation with a large sphere of influence.)

I liked those aspects, too. I especially love the end with Bruce bringing a small ficus or what-have-you, and then Alfred's girlfriend asking him to take it away and saying to Alfred, "Nice man, but not very bright." Chee!

And the practical stuff about Bruce being filthy rich as well as the humor in it is great--Bruce saying "That's nice," when Alfred shows him junk mail saying he could win $10 million. Heh.

Something else I noticed: Kevin Conroy's "Bruce" voice in the original series is much lighter than the one he uses in the Batman/Superman series or any other (it makes sense in Batman Beyond because Bruce is so much older). It's strange to hear him talk so...so positively Wooster-ish in comparison to his Batman voice.
