Oscar is misbehaving all over the map. He peed on [livejournal.com profile] feiran the other day, and last night she came panicking into my room to tell me one of the cats had taken a dump in the shower. Suddenly, I understood why Oscar's little tukus had been wet when I bent to pick him up.

I suppose this is some protest against the litter. I scoop it out regularly, and I've mixed in fresh litter just this week, but I suppose they need their litter changed more frequently than once every two weeks even so. Damn, I was really hoping to put off having to change it every week until they were, like, cats.

The litter I can fix. How to break them of the habit of trying to get in every door that was ever closed to them, I don't know.

Having ownded cats, I don't think you can. The trick is to put more than one door between you and them.

Or to distract them, which is what I've been doing. "Ooh, look, babies, FoooooD!" ::runs out the door::

As the former owner of two cats - scoop every day, change litter every three to five days. Trust me.

Yeah, I guess so. ::pouts:: They're babies, though! I shouldn't have to! ::whinewhinewhine:: Oh well, better than presents in the shower, I guess.

I hope it's not...

I have had cats who don't use the litter box because there is a problem (or trauma) currently associated with it.

I caught Sheena not using it recently but she was having trouble getting out of the door flap on the enclosed box... So I removed the flap.

I have also had cats who were sick and it hurt them to use the litter (constipation, UTI) so they went elsewhere.

Finally, the cat may just be pissed about something. I did hear that the rule of thumb is +1 (one box per cat + 1 extra). That doesn't work in my small apartment but YMMV.

My cousin has 3 cats and 2 litter boxes, both in the bathroom, but far from each other. Apparently the cats didn't like sharing one box.

Could yours be the same?

As I've caught them in the box together at the same time using it for the same ends, my guess is not. But we have to figure out what's bugging Oscar, as he peed on some garbage in my roommate's room this morning, which isn't okay...
