So. Fucking. Stupid

So, roommate Liz and I went out to Long Island at the asscrack of this morning to get Oscar and Wally their shots; we didn't even hardly get lost (one wrong turn, that's it), and we got there with enough time to spare that we picked up coffee and diet pepsi, respectively. We were one of three groups there to vaccinate kitties. There was a lady with a cat in a bag carrier and the kitty's name was Harley Quinn. I ::heart:: geeks.
Unfortunately, that was like the first and last cute or happy thing that happened. After waiting about twenty minutes in freezing cold AC in the waiting room, we went in to see the vet technician who asked us how they were doing. Now, as our adoption from the North Shore Animal League comes with 30 days of pet health insurance, I figured it couldn't hurt to tell the truth. Truth is, Wally has sneezed more times a day since we got him than all three of my parents' cats have ever done that I've seen. So, yeah, me being the paranoid, hypochondriac mommy, I was sure he had an upper respiratory infection. And Oscar has had gunky build up in the corner of his eye for a while now, not to mention he'd gotten sick just last weekend. I figure he probably had something that needed attention, as when Max had that build-up, the vet had us putting cream on his eyes.
Man, I hate being right.
The vet tech thinks Wally probably does have a URI, and Oscar might have conjunctivitus. Which means she couldn't give them their vaccinations. And, because you don't need an appointment for the vaccinations, but you do need them for seeing the actual vets if you actually want to be seen on a weekend, there was no way to get them seen today (not that we wanted to wait for FOUR HOURS for the vets to show up to the clinic). We'll have to bring them back. Thankfully, Liz has a flexible work schedule and can take them in on Tuesday, but we'll still have to bring them back again for another check-up and then the vaccinations.
It's possible (though not bloody likely) that the vet will say Wally doesn't need medicine (he's sneezing less now, so maybe he's getting over it), but I wouldn't count on it as the vet tech seemed inclined to believe that it could spread easily to Oscar and probably already has. A URI clears up pretty easily in adult cats, but not kittens apparently, so there's no just waiting it out. And Wally was pretty lethargic today (whereas Oscar was squirming and meowing like a mad kitty). Mostly, I'm just trying to keep them quarantined away from my cats at home and get them back into the city ASAP.
I wonder if my weird, sudden onset of a congested nose isn't sympathetic pains to what the babies have gotten. If so, then I am no longer "on my way" to being a crazy cat lady. I already am a crazy cat lady. Excellent.

Date: 2006-07-31 12:11 am (UTC)Good luck with the kitties. Our dog came from an animal shelter, and he had problems with mange as a puppy. Now he's fine and happy--and despite his apparent ancestry, is starting to shed like a Golden.

Date: 2006-07-31 02:13 pm (UTC)This is the problem with shelter pets, I guess. I mean, if we'd taken the ones at the ASPCA, they would have been, overall, cheaper, but we wanted kittens that we could raise together to be friends, and there's no guarantee that even in the separate cages they kept the cats in at the ASPCA that they would have been any healthier (a good deal of them weren't, in fact).
