"Perchance to Dream" is the second episode on my second volume of the Batman: the animated series DVD collection (hmm, shouldn't they have found a way to package it so that that episode was a Two-Face one? Discuss). It's one of my favorites, or at least one of the most memorable for me, as, ever since, I've been able to identify BTAS fans without geeking out on fandom first by seeing if they know the trick that Bruce uses to realize his world isn't quite as it seems.

I still feel cheated by the episode a little, as I know I've read things in my dreams...

But really, Batman has to call up an obscure fact like the hemisphere of the brain responsible for dreaming does not include the ability to read to figure out that his parents being alive, his engagement to a de-clawed (heh, it works on two levels) Selena Kyle, and him not being Batman isn't a sign things aren't real?

How could he ignore this?

The godawful hat on Selena's head wasn't his biggest clue right there that this world was wonky? Sheesh. World's Greatest Detective, my ass.

Heh, yeah, though I was more distracted by the guy who sounded like (may have been) Jonathan Rhys-Davies.

Depending on his state and orientation of mind . . the other elements might be something that, in dreaming, he can easily accept, while owing to the particular nature of the way he trained his mind (in TAS continuity), something subtle like that really might throw it off for him.

(sorry to go all pedantic. Really, I have no idea.)

Yeah, I saw that episode, though I'm afraid I was probably a kid at the time. I still remembered how it ended up though.

I guess, but everyone else was dressed fairly normally. Bruce even had his ugly brown suit on.

I wonder if, being that dreams get away with stuff, that excused the fact that Bruce's office at WayneTech has a full-length meeting table in it. I mean, can't he just call people to a conference room? Does it have to be in his office?

Aren't dreams great?

Yeah, a slight shift of focus and the entire dreamscape tangentialises. Your perceptions of the dream shape the dream, and are shaped by the dream, and the undercurrent of the unconscious delivers a neverending stream of things that bubble up to the surface.

My father was going on about a corporation, which I knew of, but had not encountered in life, and I said so, few weeks back. I was the in middle of a dream that night, and suddenly encountered said corporation in a practical (for a dream) context, and the dream then carried on as it was.

Rant on how cool dreamstuff is aside, if you're a billionairre, your office should totally be the entire top floor of the corporate skyscraper! Or maybe I'm just extravagantly minded. :D

Yeah, seperate meeting room more kosher. I'm not entirely sure why I'm justifying tenuous cartoon dream scenes . . but it sure filled time.

Hey, maybe having the meeting table right there means he can totally show off how awesomely bad-ass it is to be the billionaire boss by calling meetings and then not going to them while still being the same room. That is power. USA#1!!!

I saw that episode a while ago and pondered that point, since I couldn't specifically remember reading anything in my dreams. About a week later and also a few days after that, I definitely did read stuff in my dreams, so I proceeded to forget all about the episode until just now. =)

I know what you mean, happens every time I dream, too.
