A decent, if decidedly 'ooh, loooook at the craaaaaazy anime' type article in The New York Times about Goro Miyazaki's animated Tales of Earthsea. Love the following snippet for how fucktardy it is:

When American audiences will have the chance to judge Goro Miyazaki’s work for themselves is an open question. There is currently no plan to distribute “Gedo Senki” to theaters in the United States; the rights are tied up with a 2004 Sci-Fi Channel mini-series.

Yes, thank you Sci-Fi. A truly terrible miniseries will possibly keep this film from being distributed in the US until 2009. Gah, people are stupid.

Yeah, that really irritated me. LeGuin had some issues with his adaptation, but she didn't seem as upset as she was with the Scifi Channel's mistreatment of the material--or maybe her spirit is just broken. Anyway, I'm sure I'll find this movie before 2009 somehow.

When is the DVD release date in Japan?

I trust that most real anime fans will, really.

LeGuin did sound kinda broken, but still a tad snippy. I don't think there's an adaptation she would be happy with ever. I'm sure whatever the changes, they'll make sense in the movie.

Yeah, I remember reading that he really wanted to adapt the first two books but those were so hardcore owned by Sci-Fi that he couldn't touch them. So because Sci-Fi didn't have the rights to the rest of the books, he took those stories and fiddled with them.

It looks stunningly beautiful if nothing else. I'd like to see it.

Studio Ghibli movies always do look beautiful, even if they don't end up being that great (Howl's comes to mind here), so I'd like to see it, too. I'm comfortable with my lack of depth.
