Just watched the first episode of Torchwood, so it'd definitely way too early to say I think I'm going to like this, but it definitely didn't suck. In fact, for a spin-off show, it was even better than expected. For all that it's a spin-off, it doesn't obnoxiously reference Doctor Who much. To understand the references Captain Jack makes in the first episode would require knowing what had happened in the first series of the new Doctor Who, but understanding the references isn't important. When he explains some of the after effects of, say, a TARDIS landing on a time rift, it doesn't make any sense to the girl he's talking to, and it doesn't matter. There's the potential that, as more is explained, more will be expected of the viewer in terms of having seen the first and beginning of second series Doctor Who, but I think I could even have faith they'll make it all right.

In other terms, I don't see why this hasn't grabbed many of the people on my friendslist who've seen it ([livejournal.com profile] viridian, you would be the exception). It was well done, humorous, and mad. I think I'd enjoy it just the same if I hadn't seen Doctor Who first.

I watched the first two eps (at least most of them, the cd I got from a friend turned out to be corrupted, bleh), and thought it was alright, didn't make me squee as much as DW, but we shall see. And the female lead kinda annoys me with her huge gap between her front teeth...

It's more serious than Doctor Who, I grant you, but I don't have a problem with that. I actually like that it's not trying to be Doctor Who redux, you know? It's a darker take on the world the Doctor has moved through willy-nilly, actually watching the consequences of aliens impacting on humans, and I like that. But, then again, I rather liked The X-Files for all that it was about the normal people not knowing about aliens. Also, loved Men in Black, and if this is basically that with Captain Jack at the lead? You won't hear any complaints from me.

The female lead's teeth don't bother me so much any more. They did for the first episode, then when I realized she wasn't going anywhere, I just stopped noticing. Plus, I mean, the second episode was all about Jack and his (undisclosed) sexual preferences, so I stopped paying attention to a lot of stuff...
