trinityvixen: (mad scientist)

Ignore the icon. Pretend I have no background in science. Now, read this article in the New York Times and tell me how anyone with half a brain shouldn't be mostly insulted by the "Ooh, but wait! Don't jump to conclusions!" nature of it. A scientific report is nuanced you say? Shocking! Taller people aren't necessarily smarter? Get out! Taller people might just be better nourished and therefore have access to the things that a richer diet implies--caring, attentive parents with money enough to support their education? Fantastic!

Okay, I'm a scientist again. WHAM! That was the sound of me beating my head against my desk. Excuse me while I do a few more rounds... ::headdeskheaddeskheaddeskheaddesk::

Saw Evil Dead: the Musical last night. Very silly, fun time had by all an sundry. Didn't stay for the Q and A with the ladies of the first movie because I honestly have no idea who they are. If it were the chick from Army of Darkness, I would, but yeah, not so much. Had a devil of a time not flinching when they spurted the fake blood out over near us even though we were out of the splatterzone. Guy playing Ash did credible job, good for him, that's a tough pair of shoes to fill. Very skinny though--I like my Bruce Campbell and his impersonators to have a little meat on them. Skinny, actually, is my complaint against the whole cast. Damn, I have never felt heftier next to the leading ladies with their two-inch thick waists and fairly substantial muscles. Damn actresses.

Oooo -- was the woman who got raped by a tree there? Silly people, going to see Evil Dead when I had to be at rehearsal.

I gather that all the ladies were there, so yes?

And silly you, going to rehearsal! Ridiculous, I say.

Yes, yes, I know. I've even read about three official books on the making of Evil Dead, and watched all three in one afternoon (which I don't recommend).

Yeaaaah, no. I love me some Bruce Campbell and some Sam Raimi, but still. No, thank you.

I realized it's been forever since I saw either Evil Dead movie. I saw Army of Darkness recently, but not either of the first two. Weird what you do/don't remember.

Yeah, the lady who was the dumb blond/professor's daughter had what I think were the most perfect abs I've ever seen.

It makes me want to cry, it does. She also seemed a tad less enthusiastic than the rest of the cast. Pity. I mean, I'm sure it's tiresome night after night, but still fun! You get splattered with fake blood! You get to splatter others with it! It's not like she got stuck playing the pun-spewing demon!

Really? She seemed to be having a great time when we saw her. Maybe she was just having an off night.

See, abs like that don't make me want to cry. It's like watching Olympic athletes, or Yo-yo Ma, or reading Shakespeare. They're so far beyond what I'd ever be able to do that it doesn't inspire envy anymore. I just sit back and admire someone else's perfection of the human form.

They were all pretty great dancers, and that was definitely fun to watch. I love a guy who can dance, and ALL the guys danced! Woo!

Yeah, maybe it was an off night. Mind you, if I had to run around in the shoes she was wearing, I'd be a right bitter pill by the end of the night, too.

I dunno. I think the article was handled pretty nicely -- a good example of someone questioning the easy conclusion and suggesting that, no, correlation != causation, instead it could be some third(!) factor causing both the observed phenomena!

Which is a message that it's nice to see get communicated to a world that usually ignores the point. Or, rather -- in a society as nuance-free as ours, it's nice to see someone pointing out the nuance, even if some of us may find the presence of nuance an obvious prerequisite to a responsible study.

I do enjoy the thing saying there are nuances. Perhaps my aggression is better vented in the direction of ire over the fact that we need remind people of that, which, to be honest, isn't something to take the writer of the article to task over but the reader. Ah well.
