Two Questions

Someone ::looks suspiciously in a certain someone's direction:: wants a list of all my mp3s. To give an idea of how long it would take for me to individually go through each and every one and jot down what I have, allow me to give you some dimensions of my largest (and, to be honest and avoid exaggeration, my main) folder of mp3s:
::right click, select 'Properties'::
::wait...wait...still counting...wait...::
mp3s (name of folder) Properties:
Size: 12.2 GB
Contains: 2,053 files, 94 Folders

So, my question is this: how the friggin hell do I copy the titles of all these mp3s to a file to send someone without going through it and typing up 2,000 entries myself!?!?!

My second question is directed to men out there. If you were walking around and your fly was not only not buttoned but you were hanging out of it, wouldn't you notice? Only 'cause this guy on the subway yesterday didn't seem to....

View the folder in list mode and give the guy a bunch of screenshots. Let him deal with writing it all out :)

I know how to do it in unix. I wonder if there is a similar way under Windows. On a unix system, you could go to the main MP3 folder, and type "find | cat > outfile" and outfile would contain a list of every file in that subtree. find lists all the files in the subtree and cat writes a stream to a file. Are there similar commands in DOS?

back when I had audiogalaxy, it would create a list of everything you had and put it into an html file. I don't think it exists any more, though.

oh, maybe you could do it in winamp? save the playlist and then send them it? I dunno if that would work since it might realize that the songs in question aren't actually on the other person's computer and not give them a list, but it's worth a try.

That would actually work. Winamp stores in the playlist the file name by default and then, once the file name is located on the computer, it replaces it with whatever's in the mp3's track info. If you send the playlist to the person, he could just hit play and winamp would run through the entire list in a matter of seconds, replacing all the mp3 track infos with the file names that it can no longer locate.

I still vote for sending the screenshots, though, just to be annoying ;)

Lol! you use winamp right? or some kind of player... I just meant send me a copy of your playlist for what you most play on your comp (i have a general playlist of my fave songs i use on winamp....)

or, just reccommend some music for me -- that's what you did the first time right?

Heh....winamp. It's so bleedin obvious, of course I didn't think of it. Also, I like the way Mr. Jr thinks about this filelist stuffs. I'll pass both along in an e-mail. You pick, you question, and I'll figure out what else to pad it out with.

Very easy in Windows.

1. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A DOS window should open.
2. Type this:

cd "directory"

Replace "directory" with the name of the folder with your mp3 files.

3. Then type this:

dir *.mp3 > filelist.txt

The text file "filelist.txt" will have a list of all MP3 files in that directory. Type "exit" to close the DOS window, and you're done.

Almost. That won't include subdirectories. So make it:

dir *.mp3 /s > filelist.txt

Or, for less obnoxious formatting:

dir *.mp3 /s /b > filelist.txt

As for your second question... Unfortunately no, not necessarily. Flies come undone, boxers don't always cover very well, and unless it's really cold out you won't necessarily notice. (Then again, I've seen women in public with jeans unbuttoned and/or unzipped, and I think it's deliberate on their part.)

Well, it's a *tad* different with us girls seeing as we've got nothing to have hanging out there anatomy-wise, not really. However, I was nearly in a state of uncontrollable fits once we were away from this guy thinking about "There's Something About Mary," fits that were made worse 'cause I had to explain why it was funny to my horrified companion.

Ah, someone finally got to question #2. Fascinating.
