Here is what you are not allowed to do ever: YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO GET ON A CROWDED ELEVATOR AND PLAY "GUESS WHAT FLOOR YOU WANT TO GO TO."

I get on the elevator at 15 and siddle in between people. Two girls get on with me and hit 14 immediately. If that wasn't aggravating enough (THERE ARE STAIRS, MY GOD), they get out look around, decide this isn't their floor, get back on the elevator, and press 12 (like most buildings, we have no 13th floor, so that was the next one down).

Lather, rinse, repeat, same thing happens on 12, and then get back in and press 10 (so generous! they skipped 11!). A lady behind me finally grouses at them and they get out and stay out on 10 whether it's their floor or not.

Then we stopped on 9 for someone else.

Ah, you caught the local. In the Flatiron, each elevator can only fit six people (with bags) or seven to nine without (depending on how smooshed you want to be). If you leave at five, this means the elevator stops on every floor, people look in and see they can't fit, then you go and stop on the next floor.

I've done what you describe, but there was no one else in the elevator at the time. It may just be going floor to floor, but if you're trying to figure out what floor out of twenty it is, taking the elevator seems a bit more appropriate.

Of course, after three failed guesses, I went back to the lobby and asked.

Yeah, I'm familiar with the "local" v "express" concept. I work in the hospital building, so you get newcomers all the time who aren't ever sure where anything is even though they most of them have cards with floor numbers written on them. I can forgive someone being lost, but those girls weren't even trying. They were pissing away their time and weren't asking anyone for help and were nervous-tittering about ha-ha, aren't we so cute, we have to keep doing this?

If I couldn't find my floor, I'd have asked in the lobby, too. I also would have just gotten off, checked for stairs, and then worked my way down. Better than working the way up...
