I watched The Colony last night. This is the renamed version of The Advanced Guard, the made for Sci-Fi Channel movie that I lost to the flood.
Can I tell you that this is the first time I've ever longed for the version that was edited for television? Because seriously, I don't know what happened to the movie when it got transferred to DVD or whatever. It is the same movie. It's about aliens coming to Earth to figure out how to control humans so they can then steal all our resources and enslave us (as you do when visiting new planets). There was the guy who looked something like but not quite the oldest brother from 7th Heaven (who must have been the one I thought was cute or something but not so much any more--stupid disguising bangs!); The chick I vaguely recognized from stuff; the uncle from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air; and even one of those "Hey, it's THAT guy!" actors, the pilot from the episode "Ice" of The X-Files (no, really, check out his IMDB creds; he really is THAT guy).
And then, for some reason, there were karaoke-worthy videos of some naked blonde chick stuck in between scenes. WTF? She wasn't in the script as a character, the scene with talking and such played on so you could hear the dialogue while the faux-sweat covered chick "danced" around (with about as much talent as a third rate stripper with two broken legs--and the fake sweat just made her obviously surgery-enhanced "goods" look that much more rubbery). When I say "karaoke-worthy," I mean the quality of video and the attempt at making this have anything to do with what was going on was...nonexistant. The video was "artistically" blurry; the background was a green sheet; and there was no music, just this chick grinding away. Occasionally, she would look at her hands and stuff, I guess "surprised" at them (the aliens took on human form to pass). At one point, two characters talked about their first kisses and then naked chick was joined by naked guy (you only really saw his hands on her back) and there was grinding that really...ugh-ed up the cutesy scene.
Yeah, I'm not sorry I don't remember that from the television broadcast. Good news is the movie was just about as "good" as I remember, so, it was worth the rental but not holding onto. Hooray for letting go!
After that, I opened my second series of new Doctor Who to relieve the pressure of What-the-fuck?-i-tude from The Colony. Can I say that there's almost no point in the series at which Ten is cuter than when he steps out of the TARDIS completely better after his regeneration? Maybe when he hugs Sarah Jane hard enough to lift her up off her feet. But, really, in an entire regeneration so far, I don't think there's anything David Tennant does that is more adorable (and that is saying a lot) than those short bits at the end of "The Christmas Invasion." That's my Tenth Doctor at the highest point of "I WANT TO HUG HIM SO HARD HIS SPINE BREAKS!"
Yes. Ahem.
