Feministe has a story about the hilarious outdated "Carousel of Progress" at Disney World.

Woo-hoo, yes, let's complain about the sexist nature of the ride and the unrepentant way that even the future imagines minorities and women as nonexistent and secondary, respectively. La la la feminism ra ra ra. Whatever.

Know what makes me actually mad? I now have the *&#^%&*^%!! song from that goddamned ride stuck in my head. ::sings:: "It's a great, big, beautiful tomorroooowww..."

Kill me.

Another book-reading-walking incident: some lady handing out religious paraphernalia got close enough into my periphery to drag me away from my reading...so she could offer me something to read. Yeah, thanks. I wasn't really enjoying the book that I had my nose in. Nope.

Um...it's a ride about technological progress, sponsored by GE. Complaining that it has lots of GE advertising and doesn't talk about social progress is like complaining that Splash Mountain portrays bears as mischeivous rather than endangered victims of hunters.

Well, the advertising has since been scrubbed (mostly--I think the appliances would still have logos on them somewhere, but it's not noticeable), so that's less of a problem. Advertising is more perilously irritating at EPCOT, though that too has gotten "better."

The ride is a dinosaur that no one goes to see unless they're tired of walking around in the Florida heat and need to take a load off for 20 minutes. It's only kept running so they can maintain the claim of longest-running stage show or something.

Has it been scrubbed? I mean, GE isn't using that slogan anymore (new one is "imagination at work"). Maybe they're just updating the advertising portion FIRST. :P

There are sensible, informed feminist positions, and then there's getting bent out of shape over stupid things. And frankly, I think the latter undermines progress made by the former.

I don't disagree. Getting mad about this relic doesn't help. And it gets songs stuck in my brain that are terrible and now I'm pissed off. Which doesn't help neither.
