I think this sums up accurately my excuse for why I'll never be good at Guitar Hero.

No, seriously, I'm the jerk-wad who told my flute-playing, band-director-dating former roommate that I flat out believed that things like "meter" and shit that they forced down our throats at school were made up bullshit to make music people feel smarter than me. I also told her band-director boyfriend that I think he's making it up when he conducts. I did try to sound sarcastic, but I really did mean it. That shit is totally made up.

But, as I told some people, were I to get a game made to reflect my hobbies, it wouldn't be nearly as cool as Gabe's.

Are you kidding? Video Game Player Hero would be awesome!

Also, to note: I was the music director for the Firehazards for a year, and have been occasionally called upon to conduct other singing events. I'm always making it up. It's handwaving intended to vaguely mark time. Seriously.

It's nice to hear that. I mean, to a point, I can believe it does something. I just feel like it's hand-waving to mark time that someone has decided to formalize needlessly so it looks harder than it should be.

And my "Insert Hobby Here" Hero game would be, like, nail-painting hero. Or Dodgeball Hero. Which would be fun, but probably more a threat to one's electronics than the Wii...

My "Insert Hobby Here" Hero game already exists. It's called Karaoke Revolution.

There must be some sort of dodgeball game that uses that Eye-toy accessory. It's the most logical use for that thing...

Probably coming to a PS3 near you, thanks to their new camera advances.

And my "Insert Hobby Here" Hero game would be...Rock Band 2, with the added Saxophone track.

On the actual cartoon--just wait until November. Rush's "Tom Sawyer". A 7/4 time signature. Madness!

I have to disagree with chuckro on the conducting--I've conducted as well. On its most basic level, yes it's just keeping time, but it's a whole f'ing lot harder than that. The only way I can really describe it is it's a sort of almost psychic link between conductor and musicians--you can feel how what you do affects the music and vice versa. From the other side, I get all the expression and dynamics from the conductor in concert. And if they hesitate at all--not even in a way that you could point to and see what went wrong--everything goes to hell. It's like a chorus can smell fear. If the conductor is unsure of an entrance, it doesn't matter how many times you rehearsed it, someone will blow the entrance.

Is it formalized? Yes. Are there other equally effective methods? I'm sure there are. Is there a lot of snobbery? Well, duh. But there is something to it.

Oh, I'm aware that it's just like everything else anyone ever went around purposefully structuring and geeks spent time practicing to all distraction. I just vent my thwarted musical frustration upon it, is all.

See, I still wouldn't be able to play Photoshop Hero. However, "AWESOME FLARE" bonus of 2000 points nearly made me spit-take at work. Hi-larious.

That particular director probably was making it up.

Honestly? Actual conducting-conducting isn't hard. At all. I'm not saying a monkey can do it, but like, I can, and I'm distractable as all shit.
