More adventures in having an IMDB brain: I rented Sharpe's Enemy, and I recognized the actor playing the scant role of the rocket-battalion lieutenant as being Young Sherlock Holmes. I cannot possibly overstate the cheese factor of that movie. It's like a fanfiction that they made into a movie: young Holmes and Watson meet at boarding school where they solve a great mystery together and part on good terms with the promise of greater things to come. The mystery involved a cult of mummy worshippers or something.

I used to love that movie. Yes, I am embarrassed for myself--or would be if I had any shame.

Staying up all night is not easy, and I shouldn't do it often. It is made easier by watching Dexter, however. I've already seen season one, but I managed to stay awake until almost 7 am on Sunday rewatching it.

This makes the umpteenth night I've stayed awake for no good reason. Versus all of two I can ever remember staying awake to actually accomplish something.

I got to play with fabric dye this weekend! It was fun and less messy than I'd anticipated. Unfortunately, the piece I most wanted to dye proved resistent. I managed to get a spare sock the exact right color I wanted, but 100% polyester clothing does not like the dye. The best it got was a slight tinge. It's lucky that it's not a hideous color or anything, but I'm still disappointed. I will have to see about getting something that can actually tackle the polyester.

But clothing dye? OMG so much fun! And a good reason to keep the odd sock or two to experiment with.

homg, Luke recently rented Young Sherlock Holmes - he still loves that movie. It was my first time watching it, and the bizarre-factor was off the charts. Yes, it really was like fanfiction written by some 16-year-old with a penchant for off-the-wall cult mythology. You know, the sort of crazy plot that you come up with when you're young that doesn't really make any sense or have any relevance, you're just mashing it up with your favorite characters. Yeah.

I rather liked the dude who played Sherlock, though.

Heh, I'm glad I'm not the only one. It was taped off of the movie channels (when we had them back in the 1980s), and I must have watched it off and on for about five years. Crazy times.

The young Sherlock was cute enough, and I generally liked him. But yeah, the movie is total crackfic.

Gotta love those rocket battalions. We'll go to the moon in those things one day!

Ah, so you're a fan of the Sharpe series then?

Dude, he has all the books. And all the movies. He's why I know about Sharpe! Truly, [livejournal.com profile] invisibledan is to blame for my fascination with many good things, including Doctor Who, Red Dwarf, and Due South. Yet, what have I given him?

Used Orson Scott Card books, of course!

Wait.... did you just call her "dude"?

I answer to 'dude.' Who doesn't? "Dude" isn't gender-defined.

I always thought "dude" meant guy, but what do I know? It's not like I'm a professional writer or anything....

I'm not either, but I think the pronoun "dude" versus the regular noun "dude" is gender neutral. You can be "a dude" which is a guy, or you can be, "Dude!" the exclamatory non-gendered appellation.

Thanks for clearing that up, dude.

Exactly.

And you're welcome.

Indeed I am. I cherish any opportunity to reference that terrible line from Sharpe's Enemy.

Heh. Sorry, I wasn't trying to laud it, only to demonstrate my crazy imdb brain. I'm diggin the series, even though it's as much a bodice-ripping, eye-rolling excuse for a cute boy to be cute and noble. Hey, never stopped me from watching Horatio Hornblower.

I like the series for the most part. It's not great, but most of the telemovies are pretty solid. The acting was generally very good, they just needed a bigger budget. Look out for the Borg queen in Sharpe's Honor. Wesley Windum-Price even shows up for the last few tele-movies.

You should try the books. They're much better. In fact, they're so good, Eugene read the entire first two before giving up on the series!

I didn't give up! I took a break. I liked them a lot, but do you know how many books I have to read? Not to mention all the books I have to write.

Yeah, I used to like Young Sherlock Holmes. I still might, for all I know, but I haven't seen it in a while. I found my VHS of the movie recorded from cable at my mom's last weekend and decided to chuck it. It's out on DVD after all.

My favorite "fannish" Holmes movie is Without a Clue, where Holmes turns out to be an idiot (played by Michael Caine, I think) and Watson solves all the mysteries. I don't think that's out on DVD yet. Plus I also liked The Return of Sherlock Holmes or something like that, where Holmes reawakens from cryogenic sleep in the 90s and can't solve mysteries because he keeps misinterpreting modern day clues.

I'm happy to see a boxset of the Granada Holmes series is coming out on DVD soon...

These all sound like classics. I have to see them, methinks.

And I bet I still love Young Sherlock Holmes, too.
