Reading a poll about TV, I just remembered having a dream last night about watching commercials for the CW's Thursday night. (Yes, it was that exciting.) Somehow, they wedged another show inbetween Smallville and Supernatural. I was annoyed by this as it meant having to watch Supernatural at 10, which wouldn't give me much time to write my Smallville review for Pink Raygun (since I'd almost certainly squander the hour between shows on nothing) before I would need to sleep.

I realize, now, that dream-me wanted to watch Supernatural. This is why I know it was a nightmare.

(I'm kidding. At least I know why I dreamt about Supernatural. If you go to this thread at TWoP, there's a bunch of "motivational" posters, and the Supernatural fangirls outnumber all the other fangirls combined, I swear. I've been flipping through the archive--holy JESUS there are 1000 pages (literally!)--for the past few days now.)

Hey, what all costumes did people see last night? I saw a shark at 34th street, Maleficent at 42nd street and rode all the way to 125th on the A with a Jedi. All were actually stellar costumes (especially the Jedi, but I'm biased; also, people who are Star Wars geeks are like mad prepared for Halloween 365 days of the year anyway).

ETA: WE HAVE HEAT ON IN THE APARTMENT. Of course, we have heat on a day when it's really not all that bad to do without, but I'll be happy to have it tomorrow, looks like.

I saw Bill S. Preston, Esquire, and Ted "Theodore" Logan! WYLD STALLYNS!!! *air guitar*!

And *hooray* for apartment heat. I was wondering if they'd switch it on starting the 1st. Whoa--it's November!

OOH! YOU SAW WYLD STALLYNS? Was it awesome?

We should totally do that.

And yay apartment heat!

NYU during the day had a few girls in sexy-bumblebee costumes, like your roommate at the party, but not much else. Later, in the afternoon, lots of kiddies on the main commercial drag (30th avenue). A few Supermen, some Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a Scream mask or two, don't remember much else.

It was odd, instead of going through the residential areas, the kids were trick-a-treating at the restaurants, video stores, nail salons etc. Many has "Sorry, no more candy!" signs outside, including the video store, where someone else had put up another notice: "THIS ESTABLISHMENT WAS TOO CHEAP TO SUPPORT CHILDREN IN THE COMMUNITY!!!!" Not sure how I feel about that...

Come to think of it, I did see quite a few bumblebee costumes all over the place this year? Wonder if there was something behind that.......

Ok as for what I saw, mostly it was skin. Seems the the most popular costume this year was some flavor of lots and lots of skin. Not that I was complaining mind you, just it was quite noticeable. Guy costumes, that didn't involve drag, mostly was the usual stuff. Anime/manga character of some popularity, vampires, Village People, etc.

Yeah, kids were hitting businesses around me too. More than anything residential. Maybe it's a Queens thing?

You're only just now seeing a lot of skin in costumes? I can assure you that for almost five years now I've seen nothing but in costume shops. Or, at least, I should say, in the average costume shop (not counting those seasonal behemoths that open to sell/rent just around the holiday). This is part and parcel of why it's so hard to find a costume as a girl. If you don't want to go as "Sexy [fill in the blank]" you have to make your own.

I saw, I shit you not, a "sexy miner"--complete with gold minidress and matching hard hat with lantern and gold go-go boots--when we got out of the theater. It's really quite irritating to women like me who enjoy the dress up and prefer not to have the accompanying slut-up.

I had actually seen that one. The fun part is trying to tell which costumes are the "joke" sexy ones. Because there actually are "Sexy mental patient" costumes.

I think Sexy Jesus or Sexy Abe Lincoln are my favorites.

There's been a big push, in Texas at least, for "safe" trick-or-treating venues in the form of trick-or-treating at malls, shopping strips, etc.

This is absolutely a good idea. The controlled environment is easier on the parents, and there's a limit to what the kids can take home. I think that's a good thing since, otherwise, there're plenty who'd just trick-or-treat until they had more candy than should eat in a full year, let alone in the scant week or so they would do.

Oh, the kids are still walking around with their parents, so it's not as if the kids are in danger, no matter where they go (outside of Baghdad). Besides, I'm not sure I like the coercive element in practice.

On the other hand, kids were walking up to me while I was in the store, looking at videos, yelling "trick or treat!" and holding their bags open for candy. I, of course, had nothing to give them, and their parents rushed in and whisked them away, but it was cute nevertheless.

They just need a few years to catch onto the whole thing.

As for the stores, in addition to good will, something like a video store could only benefit for bringing in parents, who'd happily rent a few titles while the kids made the candy circuit.

The eateries giving out candy doesn't surprise me. A good way to build your rep in the community coupled with a safe means of trick-or-treating. Not everyone lives in a building where they organize safe alternatives to door-to-door, building-to-building walking.

Your definition of "overrun" must be different than mine. I scrolled through 13 pages and didn't see a single supernatural. There were more Veronica Mars than supernatural.

The first 13 pages? Because I swear, I've gone through 300 pages by now, and there are at least five-to-ten SPN posts a page. A lot of them have expired, too, so I'm not even counting those. But holy jesus, do those two guys have a fan following.

We had a Halloween event at the museum. Totally overrun by people in costumes. LIke, 8,000 screaming children, literally. By the end, I didn't want to see costumes, I wanted to hide under the bed and pass out.

Aww, they're cute in costumes until they can talk. Then, never again!

Kids in costumes, adults in costumes, staff in costumes, all yelling and pushing to get at the candy. While I tried to fight my way through to do my work. Aaah!

Why fight for candy when for $2 you can buy some of your own without the shoving? Sheesh.
