Project Runway usually does its best to find someone for the ubiquitous "Design for this fabulous guest" challenge who at least is in something of a glamorous profession that would both require (and excuse) a high fashion outfit. On Project Runway Canada most recently, that challenge involved designing for a diva. Literally a diva, as in she's a soprano opera singer, and euphemistically a diva as she had about thirty billion rules for them to follow in order to secure her good opinion of their work which ranged from the understandable (she wanted something to look good at all angles because she often sings in round theaters) to the downright demanding (in no way were her feet to be visible because she only sings barefoot and doesn't want her audience to be noticing that). An opera singer going on a concert tour certainly has cause and cash to request something like what you're supposed to expect out of a group of designers.

But Tiki Barber? When he played football, maybe--maybe--he had need of some flash outfit to look good on the off days and interviews and in commericials. These days, apparently, he's on the Today Show, where fashion forward are words in another language. Morning news shows are not where one expects fashion--taste, yes, but high fashion? Hardly.

There's also the fact that OMG ALL THE DESIGNERS ARE GAY. I mean, I have no proof about the women (Elisa has her scary dedication to her boyfriend that won't allow her to touch a male model), but the guys are ALL gay (EXCEPT FOR KEVIN AND HE WANTS YOU TO REMEMBER THAT OMG), and they don't know anything about football, so how the F do they relate to this football "legend"? (Question for anyone who knows/cares: is anyone who spent their heydey on the Giants even eligible for consideration when talking about "legends"?) Then his wife comes in and has nothing to add whatsoever to what she sees them making, everyone is making a suit or a variation thereof, and her help turns out to be exactly the opposite of what he and she said would win?

To add insult to injury, I'm ill at ease with the Today Show-ifying of the winner. They revealed the winning outfit and had the designer on the show; both were obviously tamed down for the presentation. I was kind of uncomfortable, after spending a few hours getting to know the winner on Project Runway to see the winner put in this white-bread world. How can you be yourself there? The answer is you can't, and the winner, for the most part, was not. Much more tame, though better spoken (probably coached out of the fey speech, too), but just not the same. It makes me appreciate how tough it probably is to leave the show, however. Because the work room is a bastion of safety against the more conservative every-day world. God, that's sad when people can't be who they are anywhere they are.

[livejournal.com profile] feiran had an amusing comment about what she saw. I told her all the guys on the show were gay save one. She asked me to point him out and three seconds later she accused me of being a liar. Hey, I just report as I'm told. I, too, find it suspect that this "straight" guy checks out the asses of the other guys on the sly and felt the need to be so upfront about his hetero-ness when last season boasted three hetero guys in the top ten and a hetero winner. Good luck in the closet, Kevin!
