(well, I was at the time...)

The Department Head is interviewing someone today and she arrived late. So this guy has just been wandering, waiting for her. She showed up about fifteen minutes ago, and I told her about her appointment looking for her when I passed her coming in. I assumed the problem would resolve itself.

Cut to literally two minutes ago, where he reappears wanting to know where she is. He knocked on her door and got no response and he's expecting the post-doc or me to do...something. I suggested he knock a little louder in case she didn't hear him. This was the exchange:

Me: Maybe she's on the phone and didn't hear you. Try knocking a little louder, maybe?
Him: Oh no, I don't want to disturb her by knocking louder. Would you do it?

...what? First off, I'm in mid transfer of something--I've got tools in my hands as he's pestering us, so I hardly think I've got the off time to devote to solving your problem. Secondly, what? It's okay if we bother her, but not you? I'm not the one looking for a job, pal. If you're going to be a coward, that's your business. You either suck it up and wait or you fucking knock on her door a second time. I'm not going to try to ANNOUNCE YOU TO HER ROYAL HIGHNESS or some shit. Fuck, man.

This is almost as bad as the post doc that interviewed with my dad. When post docs come to UF, they take them out to dinner, introduce them to the department, etc (kind of like courting pre-frosh). At the dinner, this guy made a racial slur about one of the Asian post-docs then tried to laugh it off. Yeah. Not getting hired.

Oh, that's way worse than this guy. But all I'm saying is that not taking the initiative is a really bad precedent to set when you're supposed to be interviewing for a job to do research (where taking the initiative is sort of the center of your job).

I don't know, I can sort of see his point. You have a relationship with the boss already, and know when and how to knock. He doesn't, and could easily shoot himself in the foot before the interview even really starts. So yeah, I can see him asking you for help.

Having said that, once you tell him "go knock a little louder," he should go do that. There's asking for help and there's asking someone else to do the work for him. I'm not exactly a fan of the latter.

I don't work for this woman, is the thing. I exchange pleasantries with her on occasion, and when I know she's got someone waiting on her, I let her know, but that's it. I guess he assumed more than what was there--which is fair if you don't know the people involved.

But yeah, no one is supposed to do your job for you. Also, I don't think someone should be mad at you if you had an appointment which they were late for if you go and knock louder on their door ::rolls eyes::
