While I might fret death by zombie apocalypse by day, I apparently am greatly afeared of school by night.

In my dream last night, I was sitting near the steps at Columbia and freaking out because I'd missed some major cultures class, forgetting entirely that I had any classes on Mondays and Wednesdays. I was also stressed because I couldn't remember if I'd attended my day-time Tuesdays and Thursdays advanced, advanced math class. No amount of going, "Hey, wait, didn't I already graduate? And don't I have work during the day? And why the hell would Hugh Laurie be teaching my math class?" seemed to dissuade me from panic.

I still suffer some residual feelings of being certain that I am missing something and am going to be penalized for it through onto today. Perhaps that's becauses I've not done my homework. Off I go then.

I frequently dream that I am back in high school and show up for a class only to discover that I have somehow missed the class for an entire semester and am going to fail. Then I go and try to track down my guidance counselor and cannot find her. Since my actual guidance counselor was fired when it was discovered that she was a lesbian, and those of us who were her students had to deal with mixed up files when she was suddenly gone, I guess it is just leftover anxiety...but I do wake up feeling like I have missed something.

...that actually happens? Holy crap. Where was this, and please tell me she sued?

Depending on the state, she might not have been able to. Sexual orientation isn't a protected class under federal law, so it's a state by state thing.

Word was that she was accused of sleeping with a student and turning her into a lesbian. This did not happen on many levels (the woman was highly competent and professional and cared about the welfare of her students. She was in a relationship and had children of her own. The student, of course, was not "turned" gay - she always had been and just decided to come out, etc.)

Anyway, despite it being a very liberal town, the girl's parents were heavy hitters, and the school bowed under the weight. I have no idea if she tried to sue. my guess is that she would have wanted to avoid having her kids hassled at school.

I wonder if mine is similar--a sense that I didn't do enough, get far enough, as an undergrad?

Yikes about your guidance counselor. It's a goddamned crime that this shit passes. There are so few GOOD ones out there, the school system cannot possibly afford to toss any away for bogus reasons.

I think the issue was that one of her students came out, and she was blamed for it. There were five of us whose files were pretty much lost, and we all had to get our GEDs because on paper we had had no senior year (though we all got our diplomas). I was the only one in the LesBiGay club at school (because I am from a very liberal town that just had a few sticks-in-the-mud with power, we did still have a very open-minded environment...but a few angry parents can change anything.)
