Please tell me this isn't serious.

It doesn't get the "feminism" tag. It gets the "people are so stupid" tag. Because they are. Christ.

Perfect icon for this, though, so well done there.

Wooooow. I'm pro-choice, and I'm still deeply horrified. If this can make me think this woman is one step down from commiting murder and calling it art, and I very much believe that abortion isn't murder, I hate to think what the pro-lifers are going to do to her.

Can one woman single-handedly destroy abortion rights in the US?

While I don't actually condone mob rule...if this idiot's shenanigans drive the pro-lifers to victory, I think I'd find it hard to be upset when she's torn limb from limb by an angry lynch mob.

Best line: But Shvarts insists her concept was not designed for "shock value."

I, of course, would wonder how likely this entire scenario is--especially between the fact that she was "artificially inseminiating herself" with "donated sperm" and using "herbal abortifacients". Possible? Maybe. Likely? Holy fucking heck no.

If she was actually doing it, I hope some of the sperm donors, assuming they didn't know (and would you okay something like this if you did?) sue her ass. I don't care what it'll due to abortion law. She needs to be taken down. I think this is the most immoral legal thing I've ever heard of anyone doing. I look forward to seeing the ripped-from-the-headlines Law & Order episode soon.

I think my favorite part of the article is that they spell her name several different ways. I mean, this woman just pissed on all the reasons I'm pro-choice. And even setting aside the morality of this, who the hell wants to see a giant cube of menstrual blood and vaseline with images of a naked woman writhing in pain on it? Oh, wait, I'm sure someone in Japan does...

I don't think they can sue her. Presumably, if they were providing her with sperm for this, they took their chances. Law is such that ejaculation proves acceptance of consequences.

I more or less agree, but the fact is that I wouldn't put it past some people to think this is a good idea. That's the sad part. i almost believe it's a hoax, but I can't quite forgive humanity enough to assume that no one is so depraved as to do this.

[livejournal.com profile] linabean commented on our Band-Random mailing list, detailing exactly how absurd the premise of this is, physical and hormonal-wise. Which set off my bullshit-o-meter in the first place. (That, and the idea of a college girl getting sperm donated to get herself pregnant, and the guys not insisting on doing it "the fun way".)

Dollars to donuts says hoax, by either a standard attention-whore or a pro-life clever nutjob. But either way, it'll get talked about and claimed as true by pro-life groups for decades to come, even when the newspaper buries a retraction in three days.

And I'm Right

We have a winner!

http://www.yale.edu/opa/

Ms. Shvarts is engaged in performance art. Her art project includes visual representations, a press release and other narrative materials. She stated to three senior Yale University officials today, including two deans, that she did not impregnate herself and that she did not induce any miscarriages. The entire project is an art piece, a creative fiction designed to draw attention to the ambiguity surrounding form and function of a woman's body.

She is an artist and has the right to express herself through performance art.

Had these acts been real, they would have violated basic ethical standards and raised serious mental and physical health concerns.

I was about to note that there are no reliable abortifacents that aren't either A: restricted to by-prescription in the US or B: unbelievably short-term hazardous to the woman in question.

and a bit more from the same blog

(this blogger is one of my favorite Wiscon regular panelists)

I'm posting not because I necessarily disagree with you about the impact this will have on the fight for choice, but just because I am glad she's out there posting that perspective.

I dunno that I can stomach a perspective on this that tries to make sense of it if only because there's absolutely no way to do so. This girl is either telling the truth and is a monstrous creature, or she's lying and stirring up trouble that she is neither smart nor cunning enough to realize is going to hurt real people.
